Day 13, Tarragona to Barcelona airportNow it's the 13th day of our coast trip in Spain. That is our last day, when we leave Tarragona we take the bus direct to Barcelona airport. Before that we have something to do in Tarragona. Tarragona:We leave our hotel with sadness, and the old town too. So lot of interesting things here to look at. Our next historical place to visit today is the Roman Theatre. On the way to that place we see other nice buildings, what a facade, Moorish style. Palau Firal:Here we stand on the roof of the congress hall, Palau Firal. The old town is steep and here can clearly be seen that the town is divided in an upper and lower area. The Roman Theatre is situated on a much lower level in the old town. These stairs take us down, not so easy now when we have our luggage to carry. Roman Theatre:A wall protect the old Roman Theatre, Gunilla has found an opening and she look interested at what's inside. Deep down here they have started to reconstruct the old theatre. There is a pile with unsorted old building stones that they maybe will inserted in the theatre. Today it's not possible to come closer or into the land where the theatre is. Can they figure out where all these stones belongs to in the theatre ? They have built a frame of steel wires to symbolize how the stand once look like. The theatre was built at the end of the 1st century bc, that was when Augustus ruled. In the center there is some original stones left from the original theatre. See how they have used the terrain when they built this theatre. The drainage channels is still preserved and maybe functional when it rains. We have seen this work in other ancient ruins sites of towns we have visited. More information about a Roman Theatre:
After the visit to the Roman Theatre we must come up to the higher level again. All these stairs and we had to carry our luggage. A last view over the Roman theatre from above. Forum de la Colonia:Two blocks North of the Roman Theatre there is another ruin from the Roman era, Forum de la Colonia. One more place where we can use the tickets we bought yesterday. We asked if we could leave our luggage somewhere, no problem, we could placed them behind the ticket office. We don't have any of value in our luggage so not a catastrophe if someone steal it. We take one of the stairs to come to the terrace above where the ruins are. Can already see from here that there is something interesting there. The first we see here are the two pillars from the Roman Temple. In a line behind the pillars there are foundation for other pillars, to the right was another row of pillars. This is a reconstructed Tabernacle we could read on the sign. It was used for some religious ceremony. Is it a base for a pillar or for some other use, or ? Bird view over old town of Tarragona, zoom in to the ruins. A cistern, water was important and with this cistern they could store water from rains and used it later when the need is high. The sign says Deposito, I think it's also related to water. |

When finished with the first block of ruins we walked over the bridge to the second block. Las Plazas, a square surrounded with pillars. It was a lot of students here today, they measured the ruins and investigated it. An old road with the drain system running alongside. The same road from below and to the entrance. These were the living blocks, one of the rooms. More information about a Forum de la Colonia (only Spanish):
Mercat De Tarragona:After the ruins we start walking towards the bus station, on the way we cross this square with a market. It's after lunch time and not so much people here.
Some food for the dinner ? More information about Central Market (only Spanish):
We continue to the bus station and bought our tickets for the bus that should take us to Barcelona airport. Two hours until the bus depart. Parc de la Ciutat:Now it was hot and we walked to a nearby park, Parc de la Ciutat. It's a famous park with some old buildings, but we were tired and just sat down on the nearest bench and drink some water. Rambla Nova:Before the bus depart we think it could be could to have something small to eat. In one alley to Rambla Nova we found a restaurant that served small dishes, a Patata dish for us with coffee and Cola. Time goes quickly and here we have just entered the bus and it's leaving the bus station, in the roundabout we see from the window is a big park. We have seen most of the places we wanted, but the aqueduct we never came to. But is there a chance that the bus go that way where it's ? The Roman Aqueduct:We sit and stare out the bus window at the aqueduct, but see nothing and think we must have missed it. But just when we gave up, it appeared and it was clearly visible. This aqueduct was the main supply of water to the Roman City, still there after 2000 years. More information about Tarragona:
On the way to the airport, we pass a toll station, huge. Our last bus travel in Spain, from Tarragona to Barcelona airport, 87 km. First we thought that we had to to go to Barcelona first and then turn back with another bus to the airport. But Gunilla found that there was a direct bus from Tarragona to the airport. We saved some miles and maybe one hour. Barcelona airport:Now we are close to the airport, our flight depart from terminal 2. It's huge, it took long time for the bus between terminal 1 to terminal 2. We arrived after midnight to Arlanda airport in Stockholm. It took us almost three hours to get home these last 70 km, almost as long as the the flight from Barcelona and Stockholm. The END |
