Day 10, Castello to PeniscolaThe daily routine, change city. Today we start with the tram that take us to the train station. It doesn't take us all the way to Peniscola that we heading for today, we have to change to a local bus the last part. El Grao de Castellon:Waiting at the Grao tram station. Notice, here there are electric wires for the tram but still no rails. This just outside our hotel. Here the tram comes, a Spanish tram. Outside the old town it's connected to the electric wires, in old town it run on batteries. Skoda is the manufacturer of the bus. Jardi del Port:Here is the park we had outside our hotel room. Castellon de la Plana:Maybe it took 20 minutes for the tram to take us to the railway station of Castellon de la Plana. We have plenty of time and no need to stress. We bought our ticket at the stations office and got an explanation where the train stopped, platform no 5. That is most to the left on the photo above. Next problem to solve, Gunilla needs a cup of her morning coffee. We had to walk around in the blocks until we found one that was open. Benicarlo-Peniscola:About an hour later and we are at Benicarlo-Peniscola where we have to change to a local bus. From here we have to take a local bus to Peniscola. First bus that arrive at the time we expected was wrong according to the driver, wrong direction. Later we found that it was correct bus but with a change a couple of km away. Now we had to wait 30 minutes to next bus. But with this nice weather, who cares. The bus arrive and we jumped on, pay in cash on the bus. After 10 minutes of driving the bus come to the beach and follow it to Peniscola. Great views we had. Peniscola:It didn't take long until we could jump of the bus at Peniscola. The bus station was nearby the beach and we walk to it for a look. The distance we traveled today by tram, train and bus, 95 km. About twice the distance we normally travel a day. From distance we see the fort and our hotel. The hotel is the white building in front of the defense wall. We checked in and could leave our luggage in the reception. We start with a walk along the defense wall in North direction. We see some people fishing here and sunbathing. It wasn't possible to follow the wall very long, we had to swim if we wanted that. Peniscola is like a long beach where the buildings is placed. Take a rest and just sitting and looking at the beautiful views we have. We like this place, maybe we shall book one more night. We can do that if we skip Barcelona. Barcelona is easy to visit in the future. More information about Peniscola:
Later in the evening when it's dark we could see how few people living here this late in the season. In the tall building near the center only two rooms was lit up. Now was time to get access to our room. We got a great big room and at this hotel they serve breakfast too, it was included in the 68 Euro we paid. Here we are at the sea terrace, they have the bar here. With all doings at the hotel finished we walk out again. Now we want to have a look of the castle. The alley next to our hotel let us come to the stairs which take us to the castle. Castel de Peniscola:The lower part of the fort, here we found terraces where they had the canons in later time. A gate into the wall, we enter through the gate but we didn't find anything inside. The tunnel was blocked and the floor wasn't flat, what can they have used this tunnel for ? The entrance of the castle is on the higher level. Map over Peniscola Castle. Església de l'Ermitana:A church on one of the higher terraces. This church was in the TV-serie Game of Throne. Castell de Peniscola:Next door to the church we have the castle. The oldest parts of the building is from the 1250. Estàtua de Benet XIII (Papa Lluna):The king guarding the castle. |

We was a bit late to do a visit inside the castle today. But we decided to stay one more day here. Talked to the hotel staff and there was free rooms. It was easiest to book through Booking.com. We talk to the staff at the hotel and they arranged that we could keep the room we already have. Escaleras del Papa Luna:These stairs looks exciting, but the entrance was blocked. After walking around these steep alleys, we have built up our fitness properly. And so it has been in all the cities we visited during this trip. Near the museum de la Mar we have this terrace. Breathtaking view over the Mediterranean Sea. Here we also have a lot of restaurants. Now we leave the old city and walking towards our hotel. Porta de Sant Pere:This gate on the Southern side take us out from the old city. Some part of the former moat maybe. How can it be that old stones looks so beautiful ? Plaja Nord:The restaurant we had chosen for evening diner was closed, far from high season now. Instead we follow the beach in Northern direction. After a while we found a nice restaurant in one of the alleys. We ordered two plates that we shared. One with bread and another with melon and ham. A bottle of Sangria, we were thirsty after this day walking in the sun. A dinner like this for two persons we paid about 35 Euro. Playa Sur:After the dinner we took a walk to the Southern beach, Playa Sur. This beach is much shorter compare to the Northern beach. Back to the Northern beach and now we walk back to our hotel. The hotel is lit up so we will not miss it, the one in front of the wall. Back on the hotel. Before we go to bed we sat down at the terrace and took a drink, a San Francisco. |
