St Petersburg, part 1:A Cruise on Baltic Sea:This was many years before all problem started with Russia. After Russia's war against Ukraine it's not possible to visit Russia as a tourist anymore. Here you can see and read how it was before the tragedy. We decided to take a cruise on the Baltic Sea. Two stops, one in Tallin and the other in St Petersburg. This travel story is about St Petersburg. Earlier the name of the city St Petersburg was Leningrad or even earlier Petrograd. More than 5 million people live here. |
Stockholm harbor:We cruise with Royal Caribbean and the ship Vision of the Seas. It's much bigger than the ships we cruise with to Finland, the harbor is Frihamnen. We start our cruising and the next morning we get our first breakfast. Lot of food to choose from and it's all included. Day Three:Todays schedule, a stop at St Petersburg. Arriving at the harbor in St Petersburg:It's early in the morning when we arrive, 7 am. After finished the breakfast we were ready to leave the ship. One could sense a certain apprehension about visiting St. Petersburg. Were all the documents in order? Overview of St Petersburg:We only did a one day stop at St Petersburg and only visiting the most center of the city. The first bus in the line is our, number 24. Our guide talking to the bus driver and prepare our guided tour. The first buildings we see as we approach St Petersburg are very Russian, big and grey. River Neva:The first stop will be at the Neva River, where a couple of Egyptian statues stand and watch the ships. A staircase down to the sea. Big ships must stay outside the low bridges. Is it a local river taxi, or ? The weather isn't the best today. We will visit the old famous buildings later. St Petersburg was founded by Tsar Peter the Great 1703. It's the Russian port to the West. More to read about Saint Petersburg:

Our guide take us down in the building and hand us over to a new English speaking guide in the museum. It was a big Russian women that you don't make jokes with. Before our visit to the museum, they of course clean the statues. This museum is very big and now we have a two hour guided tour to do, don't get lost. The Hermitage Museum is more than just the Winter Palace building, five more and all of them without one is open to the public. Walking through the corridors one after one, all of them are fabulous. The guide talked very good English and we learned a lot about the arts. Look up at the ceiling, what incredible decorations. We found many students learning how to paint as painters in the history did. We were allowed to take photos of all paintings but not use the flash. You find Rembrandt, Picasso and all the other famous painters here. No glass protection windows between, but touch a painting and I'm sure you have a new home in St Petersburg for the rest of your life. After two hours of continuous walking we were exhausted, thank god, the exit. But it was a very interesting two hours and outdoors there was raining heavily. Interesting movie: Outside of the building, we didn't know that the Hermitage Museum was that big. More to read about the Winter Palace:
The guide call for group 24 to come to her, our group. Alexander Column:The Alexander Column is in the center of the Palace Square. It was raised 1834 after the victory of the war with Napoleon's France. 25 meter height and 3.5 meters wide, weight 660 tons. The granite monolith came from Finland. Palace Square:The big square of St Petersburg. We expected to see many outdoors market here, but not many people on this square. Maybe because of the bad weather that's coming soon. |
