Day 9, Sagunto to Castello

It was sad to wake up this morning because we have to leave this fine apartment. But the days goes on and we have some more places to visit before we have to go home. Today we take the train to Castello, we checked very carefully yesterday how to make this trip.

Sagunto:

Close the door to our room and leave the keys on the desk. We have plenty of time before the train departure, we thought.

We follow the nice narrow alleys back to the train station.

Plaza Blasco Ibanez:

We have a lot of time and we sat down in this nice square. But after a while, maybe we should walk to the train station if there is some trouble to buy the tickets.

A last view to the fort up on the summit. We walked into the railway station, looking at the screen, what, only 8 minutes until the train leave. We try to use the ticket machine, but it was too complicated. There was a long queue at the manual ticket kiosk. We stood there waiting and looking at the clock, now there are only a few minutes left until the train departs and it is on a platform far away.

Finally it was our turn, stupidly I asked if there was a pensioner discount on the tickets. He explained carefully how it worked. After a while we had our train tickets, now there was a train on the platform that looked like our train. But the train would stop at a platform much further away. We ask just in case, he then says that this is the train we should take. Rush out through the ticket barrier and onto the train in all haste. Thanks to all help we got. Are we now on the correct train? The train starts and at least it goes in the North direction. The tickets cost a little over 5 Euros and a little cheaper for the pensioner, that is to say me. Gunilla who have to pay adult price mumbles something about it being unfair.

Now we could relax and enjoy the views over the landscape.

Castellon de la Plana:

About an hour later and we had come to Castello's train station, a big under ground railway station. Note the difference in the language, Spanish Castellon, Valencia Castello.

The distance we traveled today by train, 51 km.

Ferro - Carril del Norte:

Iron train, the old railway station. Our plan is to stay at the harbor which is 5 km away. But first we do a stop in old town. Now we only have to follow one street to come to the Castello old town, about 600 meters to walk.

Park Ribalta:

A large long park leads us towards the old town. We sat down on a bench to drew some planes.

Passeig de L'Obelisc:

Looking at the monuments in the park, this is the Obelisk in center of the park.

Templet Mucical:

Close to the center of the park is also this, a music temple.

Street Placa de Tatuan:

After the park we come direct to the old center of Castellon. We follow the street Placa de Tatuan that started at the train station. This is also the street that the tram follow, but do you see any rails ?

At the park Placa de Tetuan we have this old building, Correos Telegrafos.

Continue walking, now we can hear some music with songs. It's a festival going on today with lot of people out on the streets. We stopped and listening to them, it sounds like some folklore music.

El Fadre:

We walked in on the Placa Major, it must be the main square of the old town. Here we have a big tower, El Fadre.

More people standing here behind the fountain and listening to another music group.

Concatedral de Santa Maria de Castello:

At the main square is of course also a big cathedral.

Mercat Central de Castello:

The central market on one side of the main square. Enter the door and walk in to see how it looks.

A big hall as all Markets has meet us. It's weekend today and many people are here to shop.

The tower El Fadre and the Cathedral Santa Maria is next to each other.

Castello City Hall:

A music group with only girls has their concert at the City Hall.

They have decorated the square with flowers, lot of flowers.

El Grao de Castello:

After we had seen the old town we took the tram down to the harbor. We have yet not book any room. We want to see how it looks here first. If not okay we book something in the old town instead.

Walking along the pier and find it nice, maybe not so many people here. We book a room at a nearby hotel. Now 3 hours of nightmare starts. We had to struggle with the booking for three hours until we got into the room. First the booking system didn't manage to sent our copies of ID card, we solved it by sent it from an Iphone instead of my Android phone. That took 30 minutes and then we got the code to the door. But when we try to open the door the code wasn't accepted. After a while I came in contact with a young Spanish girl that speak English very well and helped us. She reprogrammed the hotels codes and after 2.5 hour we could enter the room.

There are plenty of boats here, but where are all the people ?

We have read about a Planetary near the beach. That can be interesting to have a look at.

Heading towards the beach, it's placed North of the harbor.

Planetari de Castello:

When we closing in to the beach we could see the planetary building.

The planetarium has an impressive entrance, it's open and we could visit it.

The architecture is exiting and they have an exhibition where we could read about the planetarium.

The Pendulum of Foucault:

One of the more interesting things to look at here is the Foucault pendulum. When it oscillates back and forth it stay in the same direction but the Earth rotate. It's not the Universe that rotate around the Earth as it once was thought.
