Day 8, Valencia to SaguntoAfter two days in Valencia we leave it for the next stop, today we travel to Sagunto. A big fort on the town's hill has got our attention. Valencia:Gunilla found a direct bus to Sagunto and it has a bus stop near the Eastern gate. We looked for a sign where the bus stop but couldn't find it. Now we got a bit nervous because next bus will not come until many hours later. But then another bus from the same bus company, AVSA, stopped where we expected it to do that and we calm down. Bus ticket prices are, for adult 2.8 Euro and for retired 1.85 Euro. This is one of the shorter distances we have to travel between two cities, only 29 km. The bus travel has started, on an old building's roof we saw an observatory doom. That had been interesting to visit. Almost at Sagunto, from far away we could see that enormous fort on the summit. What a great day we shall have here. Sagunto:Less than an hour and we jump off the bus. The bus stop is near the trains station, that's where we take the train tomorrow. Google map tell us to take the left narrow alley, 600 meter to go to our apartment we have booked. We don't see so many cats at the cities we visit, the ones we see are very shy too. More information about Sagunto:
Our stay, the house looks to be very old, 300 hundred years, or even more ? The balcony at the yellow building is ours. We got the key in a security box and we can use the room already now, thanks a lot ! Take the stairs up to first floor. What a great place, it come more photos later. Roman Theater:Only one day here and we a lot of things to look at. We start with the Roman Theater, not much more than 200 meters from our apartment, but upwards. As most Romans ruins they are about 2000 years old. This one they have restored. Big and impressive, it can take 8000 spectators, it says something about how big this town was 2000 years ago. There are passages to the upper levels through tunnels. Here we got a glimpse of the fort we shall visit today too, much higher up on the mountain. More information about the Sagunto Roman theatre:
From here we have a view over Sagunto's old town. Castle of Sagunto:High tempo today, walking up to the fort. Here is the gate through the first defense wall. The defense wall is in great shape, but it's much younger than the roman era. Next passage, second defense wall. From here we have the choose, go to the castle, right or the old roman fort, left. We only have time to visit one of them. We are always interested in the roman culture, even today. We follow the defense wall in Southeastern direction. We get more fabulous views over the old town and surrounding mountains. Last gate until we come to the roman ruins. Always so fascinating how they could build these fantastic buildings with no modern machines. Birdview over Sagunto Castle. They have collected a lot of stones from the ruins along the wall and other places. What a lot of work it must have been to fabricated this stone, and maybe only a small part of a hundred meters long wall, or more. We climb up to the Southern defense wall. |

From here we have a view towards the sea, looks to be most industry areas. It's about 5 km to the sea, but a river follow the edge of the old town. Something the Romans must have used. The street we walk down through. To the right the entrance if you prefer to take the train up here. In front of us, the Roman forum and in the background the Moorish buildings. This is what's left of the Roman forum. Later people built new buildings on top of the older. A part of a long Roman inscription that still can be read. Forum, U wasn't invented yet Gunilla told me. Puerte de Almenara:We continue our investigating and walk through the gate into the Moorish area. Even more defense walls, the Moors ruled the areas here from about the 7th to the 13th century. This is the place d'Almenara.
An opening in the wall get us a Northeast view. Back to the Roman forum, at this end for sure the Romans who ruled over the town had their place. Sitting here and listening to the people. And now our fort tour is over, a last glimpse over the castle. It had been very interesting to walk up there, but you must left something to look at next time you visit Sagunto. More information about the Sagunto Castle:
The apartment:Our fantastic apartment, here we can sit and enjoy the life. The balcony to the left with two chairs. The view from the balcony, straight to the archaeological museum. That's a must to visit, walking out again. There are a lot of exciting alleys to investigate, more than we have time to. Placa del Cronista Chabret:Now we looking for a super market to buy some breakfast. This is the big square at the street Placa del Cronista Chabret. We found a Consum market at the street at left and we got what we needed for tomorrow. Two hours later, about 7 pm there will be a lot of people here. Palacio del Dugue de Gaeta:Some hours later, we are now looking for somewhere to eat. Most restaurants doesn't open until 8 o' clock, but we are hungry now, not even a pizza place we found. We gave up, walked back to the super market, bought Lasagna and Sangria, 5 Euro for the Lasagna and 1.8 Euro for one liter Sangria. In Sweden the price for a Lasagna is about the same but Sangria had cost us more than 10 Euro. In front of us a tower, it's a palace we read. Back home, but we see some light coming from an alley that we got curious on. It's a church with some light show on the facade. Maybe too early to get up to the room, we leave our food in the apartment and went out for one more walk, it's our last chance. Roman ruins:We got luck on our evening walk. We found these Roman ruins, it was a rich farmer's house if I understood it correct. In old time stone was the building material. After this intensive day we were very hungry. We made us our own dinner from the food we bought. It tasted delicious I can say, better than a restaurant dinner. It was nice to use the apartment we got too, the best of them all yet. |
