Day 14, Rijeka, walk to the fortress and the observatory: |
Today we have a lot of things to do. First we want to visit the fortress up on the hill. And after that the Observatory on another hill. Our first plan was to take the bus, but later we decided to walk, then we will get more views when we climbing up the hill. Rijeka:There was no mechanical lock on the door our room, only the electronic one. Gunilla arranged a trap if somebody try to get into us during the night. Rijeka, climbing up the hill:This is the entrance door to our apartment. In the background the yellow building, that's where the bus station is. Back to the channel Muerto where we was yesterday. Somewhere here there is a staircase up to the hill. We still not used with all the car in this town. We looking carefully before crossing a street. At this gate the staircase starts, the Petar kruzic Stairway, they start to built this already in the 16th century. It's told to be 561 steps. More information about the staircase:
We start climbing up the stairs, above is the railway with a tunnel that we pass through. Now we doesn't regret that we didn't take the bus. Who want's to miss views like this ? More stairs, the pace goes down. Not even halfway up the staircase but the views gets better and better. |

First staircase finished and then another one take over. On the way up we meet other people too, most of them on the way downwards. A resting place with water, exactly what we need, and benches with great views to rest at. Now we are close to the fortress, behind this building. Follow the street to the left and looking for the entrance to the fortress. Trsat Castle:The gate was open and we walked into the castle's walls. Another gate take us to the inner yard. View to the North and the oval tower. |
When we passed through the last gate there was a sign about tickets, but no staff here. Later at the info desk they told us that it were free entrance for us. Maybe inly during the high season. Here we have stopped to look out over Rijeka town. The left wall looks new. We follow the passages around the castle or fortress as I would say. A Northern view, that's where we came from with the bus. The new motor way, it can't be many years old. A staircase inside one of the towers. A cafe at the inner yard below us. Gunilla said something about coffee. The Oval Tower once again. |

After a rest at the cafe we now leave the castle. But first a look at this room. More information about the Trsat Castle:
In the park that surrounding the castle. It looks that we are at a very high level, but it's only 200 meters. Towards Rijeka Observatory:From the fortress to the observatory it's a 2.7 km walk. We can see the dome of the observatory at the hill in the background. At the lowest point between the hills there is a bridge and deep down there is the railway. The third staircase, this is the last one. After the staircase a viewpoint. |
The walkway take us the last way to the observatory. We had an appointment with the staff here and they met us and take us for a guided tour. I have told them that I write about observatories I visit on our travels around the world. At this observatory there is also a planetarium, a cafe with a panorama view. Up at the terrace with its panorama view. What a terrific place for us and the weather was perfect today. This is the dome where the telescope is placed. We got to see everything and it was very interesting. If you want to read the full story about this visit at the observatory you find it at my astronomy pages: Rijeka Observatory. We thank Elio who was our guide at this observatory. It was a great tour with all the fantastic things we got to see. You can visit this place during the night and look through the telescope. We walk back to our apartment but on the way we stopped at this old buildning. During the years this street have had many different names. More information about Rijeka:
