Day 7, Pula, walking in old town: |
Pula in the morning:Waking up in the morning in our new big apartment. We have a living room, two bed rooms and a kitchen. Making our breakfast and sit down and eaten at the table in the background. We draw our plans for today, we stay here 4 nights so we have plenty of time. First a look at the Roman Arena, then go to the bus station and check that we have understood the time correctly when the bus go. And after that only walking around in old town to get us an overview what's interesting for us to see. As we already noticed in Zadar, the facades of the buildings need a little care, even our apartment. Now we walk the street that take us to the Roman Arena. Map over Pula: Roman Arena:All the way when we walk we hear a loud noise, and when closing in to the arena we found that it was from here it come. A music band repeat its performance for the evening. Wow, what exiting, but we can't go in here today, we wait until the music band is finished, maybe tomorrow. Continue walking, now ahead to the bus station. Our bus from Pula to Rovinj depart at 13:00, it's Saturday today and we leave Pula on Tuesday. It's the same time as we got from the homepage, we can relax. A bus ticket cost about 8 Euro and it take 45 minutes. Now we walk back to the harbor, at the street against the harbor we found this old style building, looks like an old luxury hotel to us. More information about Uljanik shipyard:
Temple of Augustus:Walking along the harbor was a bit stressed because of all the traffic, we took an alley into the old town. A Roman temple of Augustus, Gunilla say, not very common with temples for people, more for the gods. But the inscription says Augustus. We bought two tickets to let us go inside the temple. We can see all the repair they have done, during WW II it was heavily damage. It was Pula's industry and shipyards that were the targets. The temple is about 2000 years old, one of the best preserved outside Italy. A statue of a Roman soldier and it's captured enemy, or ? Not much left of it. More information about Temple of Augustus:

Trg Forum, the Forum square and here you find a lot of restaurants. We never got the time to eat here. Communal Palace:Communal Palace built 1296. Part of it is a Roman Temple of Diana. Church of St Maria Formosa:Excavation of the Santa Maria church, it's from the 6th century. More information about Temple of Augustus:
A lot of things we already have investigated, but how about the food ? A nice restaurant in a narrow alley attracted us. Bread, prochuto and cheese, very delicious. Continue our walk, we now head to a Roman Gate. Another attractive restaurant, but it was only 20 minutes since the last dinner. Sergius arch:This was nice to see, almost intact. A memory over the Battle of Actium 27bc, Sergii family Lucious, Sergius and Lepidus. Difficult to take a photo of it, lot of people walking around and pose in front of the gate. More information about arch of Sergii:

In front of the arch stones in the ground remind of the wall it connect to, to the left the old city defense wall. Now we walking up on the city defense wall, the later medieval one. The lower part of the wall can be from the Roman era. One important thing with this city is the observatory. It's in the Southern direction on a hill. You see the staircase in the background. Only 500 meter to walk from the gate. The staircase, old buildings, are they abandoned ? Naval Observatory, Pula:The stone covered walkway up to the observatory. The observatory is placed in the Montezaro park with old villas surrounding it. One meridian observatory and one standard. I don't know yet what's inside. More information about Naval Observatory at my Astronomy site. |

Hercules Gate:Back to old town and the defense wall, this is the Hercules gate, part of the defense wall. There is an inscription with the Roman name of Pula: Colonia Iulia Pola Pollentia Herculanea. Maybe from the 44bc. More information about the Hercules gate:
Porta Gemina:More impressive is the Porta Gemina. This gate is from later date, 200th century, it has been ten gates earlier. This is also the gate to Zero Street, the tunnels under the city. The slit where the grind was placed in. More information about the Porta Gemina:

Something here to eat ? No, not this evening but the dishes look very tasty. Toranj Cathredral:Here we found this evening place to have dinner, sitting at the square against the tower. We ordered a bottle of the house's wine, we have tasted it earlier and like it. And a pasta dinner to it. Nothing more left than find the way to our apartment. We know the town well know and it's just a short walk. On the way home we bought more for tomorrow's breakfast. More information about Pula:
