Day 9, Pula, Market and Fortress: |
Today we have planned to visit the market once again and after that walk up to the fortress and take a walk on the outside of the defense wall. Pula, to the market:To get to the market we took the the streets more North than last time we visited it. We wonder if many of the houses we see are abandoned. Perhaps the owners of them are not investigated after the war. Or is it so simple that they save money for a future renovation. After all, Croatia is heavily dependent on tourism and the last two years with Covid must have been tough. Back to the market, now we are here much earlier and there are plenty of people here. Olive oil and honey. The beautiful building to the indoor market. Morning walking break, we sat down for a while for coffee and a soft drink. A musician played beautiful music on his guitarr. After the break we walk into the old city and up the hill to the fortress. The streets are very steep up to the hill, the center of old city. |

A lot of beautiful villas a long the way to look at. A last staircase and then we are at the entrance of the fortress. Same fantastic vies as yesterday, can never get enough. The Eastern port that isn't in use anymore. Ornament on the corner of the wall. From here we have a better view into the amphitheatre and the museum than we had at our earlier visit. Follow the edge of the hill to North. They have done a lot of excavations around this amphitheatre. |
The museum had been interesting to visit, but closed for renovation. Walk around next corner and came to the Northern part of the wall. A view to the harbor, it was here e arrived with the ferry three days ago. A complex system of defense walls protect the fortress. Back to where we stared. Take the steep street down to the old city, we want to see the harbor now. Pula Cathedral, last chance to study the details of it, tomorrow we take the bus to a new city. Down to the harbor, the boats in front maybe guests in Pula. |
A very small fishing boat. Maybe they just have delivered the fish we saw at the market this morning. Martinabela of Pula, a wooden boat, they are always nice to look at. ACI Marina Pula, a boat marina at the harbor. Here we find a lot of sailing boats, they are big, maybe for rent. Before we leave Pula we must have a last look at the Roman Arena. We we walk up to the arena we found this. A Roman sewer, or ? At the Roman Arena there is also a gallery, we enter it and found they have an exhibition about caves they have found around the city. Old caves with traces of human activity thousand of years ago. Walk up the hill along the arena and then back to our room. We have to pack and plan for the day tomorrow. More information about Pula:
