Day 6, From Zadar to Pula: |
We have now been 6 days at Zadar, much more than we planned for in the beginning. Today we take the ferry to next coast town, Pula. There is a Roman Arena there that we are eager to have a look at. Zadar Roman forum:We leave our room at 10 am, that looks to be the standard time in Croatia to check out. We could store our luggage at the office which was great. Both this apartment and the earlier one had a washing machine, convenient when travel many days and don't want a heavy package. We have walked back to Roman forum, some stones left to study closer. Amazing handcraft, they have learned how to handle the earth quake they have. They put a layer of bitumen between the stones to get it more elastic to resist the vibration during an earth quake. It withstand the earth quakes but not the wars. Is this a foundation for a column or something else ? Some ornament but I thinks it's upsidedown. Water was always important for the Romans, aqueducts led the water to the town from far away lakes in the mountains, many km away at some places. A lot of birds take there morning shower here. It continue out to the sea where the pier is, now under restoration. A big ship has anchored at the harbor. |

Passing by the water organ, still playing. When a boat pass by its waves change the organ's rhythm. Its the ship Azanara Onward from Malta that visit Pula. A lot of passengers came out from the ship, they were amazed by the water organ as we were too. Now we must found our ferry, we don't want to miss it, if so we have to stay two more days. It's not Andela or any other ferry we found here, no one has a sign about Pula, its destination. We go to the ticket office and ask for the name of the ferry, Krilo Lux they say but it don't arrive until 12 o'clock. When we go out we meets the ferry. It has a triple hull to let it go fast. Now it's two o'clock and we waiting for Amal to come and meet us. We meets her at the Roman forum square and we took coffee, beer and a pizza. We talk a lot until we must go to the ferry. Amal followed us to the defense wall and we show here the great views up from here. When she leave us she gave us a bag with two apple cakes, so cute of her, thanks a lot Amal ! In low season as it is now not very much people go by this ferry. Comfortable seats make the 4.5 hours travel to go fast. The ferry stops at the islands: Silba, Ilovik, Mali Losinj, Susak and Unije. This is the third stop at Mali Losinj. |
Upper deck, but it was a bit cold to sit here, it's not summer anymore. The Sun set and it got dark. Here we have just arrived at Pula harbor, it's now 20:45 and we look around and take the direction to our stay which is at the edge of Pula old city. Follow the harbor, to the left we see the Roman Arena, what beautiful it is. It's of course closed this late time but we go closer to have a look of it from outside. What a great building and it's very intact even after 2000 years. We continue walking to our stay at the street Dobricheva ul. On the way we bought some breakfast food. When we come to the street where our apartment where, it was very dark. And as we already learned from Zadar the facade of the buildings needs a bit care, it looks a bit scary. But the street door was open and we enter the yard, got the key and open the door. What a nice apartment that met us, and it's big too. More information about Pula:
