Day 10, From Pula to Rovinj: |
This is our last day in Pula, the fifth day. In a couple of hours we take the bus to next town, Rovinj. Pula, towards the bus station:We checked out from the room at ten o'clock and there are three hours until the bus depart. We take the street down to the harbor and Roman arena to have a last look. This arena was really exiting to see, we have seen them earlier around in Europe. At Lisbon, Side and Rome of course but that one was only Gunilla who visited. There are about 230 of them so we have many left. But few of them are so well preserved like this one. At the bus terminal. We arrived one hour before the bus depart. We sat at the cafe, then a young girl arrived with her little son. It was Susanna and Jacob from Slovenia. Jacob was very charming and flirting with all girls, the waitress especially. She took the bus to Zagreb and we said goodbye to her and Jacob. Later our bus to Rovinj arrive. We couldn't take our luggage into the bus and paid 10 Kuna each to have them in the bus' trunk. The bus took the road around the fjord Limski kanal and we got great views over the landscape. Rovinj:We had not booked any room yet, we was not sure if there were much to look at in Rovinj. We get off the bus at Rovinj and took a short walk to the harbor from were we had a view over the town. Wow, what great looking old town. We directly booked a room in old town, an apartment. From the bus station it's a 300 meter walk to our room. It's many very small streets here and Google map has problem. But at last we find the street where the apartment is. Now we must found which of the doors is to our apartment. Is it up here ? We climb up the staircase and looked, there was a sign about apartment, of course it must be here. A lady comes out and asks what we are doing at her place. It was the wrong room, but she helps us try to find out where to stay. In the end, we think it's probably best to call the staff. They explain that it was the door we passed through before going up here. He also says that the key is at the office, but offers to come over with it and instruct us. Here it was, the door at the bench. When we came into the room we found it to be great. Modern, big, kitchen and a bathroom. Now when we have a room to stay at we can relax. We take one of the small streets down to the harbor to take a closer look of what nice town we are at. The square Trg G Pignaton:The square Trg G Pignaton. Earlier it had been a channel here and the left part of town was an island. |

We will not starve in this town, there are restaurants every where. In the harbor there are a lot of boats, some pleasure boats and some fishing boats. A panorama view over the harbor and the square. We decided to start with a walk around the oldest part of the town, that part that once was an island. Between the buildings there are opening and we can see the sea. Continue walking a couple of blocks. There are steep staircases between the buildings down to the sea, hotels and restaurants. Hotels with sea views and a cliff out in the sea. |
The town is placed on a hill, it's steep up to the summit. This is the most outer part of the town. A light house is placed here and a bunker. Walk back on the other side and came to this place, a market with a harbor. We bought some breakfast food to have tomorrow. It's a little bit feeling of Venice over this town, not so strange because it belonged to it long time ago. This part of Croatia is bilingual, Italian and Croatian. Another small square at the street Carera ul. After all this walking there is a need of food. We go back to where we started, the Southeast side at the street Ul Sv Kriza. That's where saw the restaurants in the openings between the buildings. We plan to eat one more dinner later so a small dish of tasting tomato, mozzarella and olives. We share these two dishes between us. After we had relaxed at the restaurant we now want to examine the inner part of the city, up the hill. |

It's so beautiful here, walk a couple of steps and stop to enjoy the views. Looking into the narrow alleys. Even if it's a stone city you found flower and trees. The church, Crkva sv Eufemija:At the summit, here is a church placed, Crkva sv Eufemija. The staircase up to the church, nothing for elderly people. Curious as we are we decided to have a look into the church. Someone who rest here under the floor. Difficult to read, but something like this: Decalerus Rentinae Eriscopal Sar Cophagos Poster Soveparavi. Latin maybe, will ask Gunilla later what it means. Gunilla bought a candle and lit it here as a memory of someone. |
Out in the sunshine again, at the Northern wall of the church we found some ancient remnants. Could it be fragments of some Roman building blocks ? Up from here we have great views of the Northern harbor. The street, Ul Grisia:When we walk down from the church we took another street, Ul Grisia, famous for its all handcraft shops. A square window has been inserted in this round opening, long time ago. It's one week into October now and many restaurants and shops close for the season. When walking and looking into the shops we got a feeling that there are many English people that have their business here. The gate Balbi's Arch:We walked out from the oldest part of the town through this gate, Babli's Arch. Built 1679. Back to our room for a shower and rest, it's tiring to have vacation ! But now we feel, we want to stay one more day. Calling the office and booked the room one more night. We have to visit the office to pay for this extra stay, it's just outside the old city. |
The time goes quickly when having this fun and interesting day, our first evening in Rovinj. We walked the streets down into old city and looking at the beautiful lights. It's not many people out in the evening, most tourist has already left Croatia for the season and we get a lot of space for ourselves. It's calm this evening with no wind, the temperature is about 20 degrees Celsius. We could sit outdoors for our dinner and thinking about Sweden where we come from. Even if they at home these days have a fine weather the temperature is about 8 degrees Celsius. At that temperatures we stay indoors. After finished the dinner we walk the streets nearby our apartment. It's totally empty along the streets away from the restaurant area. It's quiet too, little bit spooky. Ah ... pizza, but too late for that. Back to our apartment. More information about Rovinj:
