Day 13, From Porec to Rijeka: |

We only stayed one night at Porec. It's a very small town and not many restaurant open in October. Better to move on to next place, Rijeka. Porec, breakfast at harbor:
We live in a small room and thought it's better to go to a restaurant for breakfast. It's a bit cold in the morning and we sat indoors. 
In our small but cozy room. It's in center of old town and was perfect for us. But now we must leave the room. 
Walking along the harbor while we waiting for the bus, what's this ? An ice cream shop ! Gunilla, we stay here ! 
What a great start of the day, an ice cream. 
Gunilla only took a coffee. Many people are walking around at the harbor, they are waiting for a boat that will take them out on a tour. On the bus:
When we these high mountains we understand why it's so complicated to go from Rijeka to the coast at Pula and the other towns we had visited. Ucka Nature Park
When we pass through the Ucka Nature Park we can see Rijeka deep down in the mist, looks good to us. Map over Rijeka: Rijeka:
We get off the bus at the main station. Lot of people here who come and go by the buses. Compare to the other small coast towns we have visited this gave us a little bit of a shock with all people and stress. |

On the other side of the street we have the apartment we have booked. First we wanted to stay in this yellow house, but a lot of renovation going on and we chose another apartment around the corner. The church Crkva Gospa Lurdska:
Our apartment is to the right, on the left side we have this church, Crkva Gospa Lurdska. 
It was little spooky in the alley and we had problem to open the door at the street. But when indoors the apartment we see that it's very nice and it's big too. 
After we had installed us in the apartment we could go out for a first look at Rijeka. This is the hall down to the entrance door. 
Tomorrow we will visit a fortress and an observatory. We go back to the bus station to get to know which bus and where we find it. Not difficult to find which bus with help of the friendly staff at the bus station. With that done we can now relax, we follow the harbor to South. 
The office Jadrolinja, the ferry company, we have seen them in all towns we have visited. 
An old ferry at the harbor, when we came closer we found it to be a hotel. We take a look inside and find it to be nice. 
The harbor is also an anchor place for the big Yachts. |
We leave the harbor and walk into the old town of Rijeka. The street is Ul Ignacija Henckea. 
On the right we have the church Crkva sv Nikolaj Mirlikijski. 
One more thing we must know, from where does the transfer bus to the airport start ? Find it here, at one platform there were some information about the bus. Now when in low season there are not many buses to chose from. There are local buses, but then a lot of changes. 
This bus station is placed where the channel Canal Muerto is. It's also here the old town ends. 
Next thing we want to see is the town gate. Follow the small streets inside the old town, here are no vehicles allowed and it's relaxing to walk here. Town's gate, Gradska ura:
It was only three blocks from the bus station to the gate. The gate Gradska ura. The Roman Gate:
There is also one much older gate in Rijeka, the Roman Gate. We find that one too but it was covered with scaffolding. To the left of the gate is this old portal with Roman style.

There are more things here to look at. There is an excavation with remains from the Roman era. A staircase to a Roman palace. 
This building is newer, was it a olive oil factory ? When we looked in through a window, there were supports everywhere to keep the building from collapsing. 
Panoramic view over the Roman excavation, it's big and when we where here a lot of tourist groups came and go. 
Another staircase, leads up to another building. 
A well in the corner, when we looked down into it there were nothing. 
Above the well an door opening. The door opening looks very old but the building built later. 
At this place it was once a gate, blocked many years ago. It looks like it has been written something in the frame. 
We have now walked all around the old town, time for a rest and a dinner. We walk up to the restaurant above, but they didn't have any dinners and we continue walking the street to the left. |
At the end of that street we came to a big parking lot. A half house standing on top of the hill. We walked one block down to the park Primorski and found a nice restaurant with good tasting dinners for us. Vox Popvli:
After we finished the dinner we walked down to a nearby square, Trg Ivana Koblera. In one corner we found this stone: Vox Popvli, or in English: Voice of the people. Here the Romans step up and hold a speech about what they want the people to hear. Gunilla says: Croatia is a very nice country. 
The Sun set and we walk around to see other things in the old town during the evening. The Adriatic Square Fountain:
A fountain which lights that change between blue, red and green color, very beautiful. it's the Adriatic Square Fountain at the square Jadranski Trg. 
Back to our apartment, even now we had problem to open the entrance door. An old man come and helped us. 
A sign at the floor, is it the first owner of the building or is it the builder of it. More information about Rijeka:
