1: The walkway up to Rijeka observatory

At our travel in Croatia 2022 we found three astronomy related things, this is about the observatory in the city Rijeka at Croatia. If you find it interesting about our travel along the coast in Croatia you can read the full story here: Croatia 2022 (during work).

Already the day before we arrived to Rijeka I was in contact with the observatory in Rijeka. I sent them my page over the observatories I visited over the years on our travels and they find it very interesting. They offered us to come over for a guided tour.

Our walk to the fortress and the observatory:

With not so many days of our stay in Croatia we must be effective. Not far from the observatory is the fortress Trsat which we also want to have a look at. First we planed to take the bus, no 7A, but it would be complicated to wait for it at every place. Looking further on the maps, measured the distances and found it be 2 km to the fortress and then another 2.5 km to the observatory. Not very long distance but both of them are at a top of a hill.

We walked from our stay to the street Titov trg, where the river Rjecina is. Here is the hill's foot and we must start climb up the hill, not really, there is a stairscase around the corners of the building.

Petar kruzic Stairway:

At this gate the stairs starts, the Petar kruzic Stairway, they start to built this already in the 16th. It's told to be 561 steps, but all the way to the observatory there are a lot more of them.

We start climbing the stairs.

This view is a big reason to not take the bus up the hill. In the 16th it was of course no railway or bridge here.

More stairs, moving on.

What, an E-bike ! How it come here ?

Not even halfway up the staircase. In the background an old road that looks to missing some part. Below it the new motor way, that one we came from Porec to Rijeka with the bus.

First staircase finished and we cross the street, what we found on the other side ? Another staircase !

More beautiful view over the city Rijeka and its harbor.

A water outlet for thirsty walkers and benches to rest on, we need it.

Trsatska Fortress:

We have reached the fortress, luckily there were a coffee place here and we could take a rest. You can read more about this fortress in the full story of: Croatia travel (not finished yet)

After the fortress we continue our walk, now we are at the top of the hill and it's a flat walking. Far away on another hill we can now see the observatory.

We walk over a bridge and cross the railway deep under.

Just a few hundred meters left now, but more staircases are waiting for us. This is the street Ul Svete Ane where it connect to Ul Franje Belulovica. Good to know if you have the same idea to walk all the way to the observatory.

Gunilla is quick and waiting for me, why I'm slower ? I must take a lot of photos and videos of course.

Following the staircase and passing by a private villa. Up here we have views to the Northeast.

Finished the stairs and continue walking the walkway towards the observatory.

At last, our first glimpse of the observatory from a near distance.

Here it is, this is how it looks today, but we was told that they have rebuilt it three times because of wars. More information about the observatory's history at last page.
