ABOUT ACADEMICAL ASTRONOMICAL SOCIETY – RIJEKA

The Academical Astronomical Society - Rijeka was founded on 27 November 1974 with the aim of development and popularization of astronomy and related fields making them more accessible to the young population and general public. Ever since the early days of the Society, there has been a call for an observatory that would meet the needs of serious astronomical work and become a place of interest and education for wider public.

A significant step forward in realization of a long-lived dream was made in the late 1980s by reconstruction of the Italian military fort from the Second World War located on the ridge of Sveti Križ hill. This goal was finally achieved in 2001 with the support of the City of Rijeka and upon the initiative of the Academical Astronomical Society - Rijeka and the Association of Technical Culture. The ceremonial opening of the Rijeka observatory took place on 18 May 2001.

In 2004, a group of astronomy enthusiasts came up with the idea of transforming the observatory into the astronomical centre. With the support of the City Council and with the vision of the project team the idea was put into practice. Astronomical Centre Rijeka was formed by interpolating the new planetarium into the existing observatory fortress. The official opening was held on 2 April 2009.

It is the first and only Astronomical Centre in Croatia which includes both the observatory and the planetarium. The Rijeka observatory is known for numerous activities in popularization of astronomy among citizens and students, as well as for confirming the periodicity of two variable stars, studying exoplanets and contributing to the development of the Global Meteor Network.
