5, Fifth day, from Ringsjö to Everöd:Map of today's travels, fifth day, from Ringsjö to Everöd: Our driving today, the distance is about 300 km. We almost only take the small old roads, not the big roads as the map shows. Ringsjö:After a good night sleep we go down to the restaurant to have our breakfast. Lot of things to choose from and a wonderful view through the window. The lake Östra Ringsjön. Västra Strö:On the roads shortly after we left the hotel we have to stop again. We stop at Västra Strö where we have found a collection of runestones. There are eight erected stones at this hill, not far from the church in Västra Strö. A farmer from the Viking era let erect these stone as a memorial over two lost seafarer, they never went back.

Östra Gårdstånga:Next stop is at Gårdstånga where Gunilla have a runestone on her map that she want to see. |

This runestone was written about already 1627 of Skonvig. It has been moved, it was one stone of many erected stones in a ring. Tholv and Ulv erected this stone 1000 years ago. More to read about Gårdsstånga at Wikipedia:
Hällestad:
This tombstone must have been placed in the church's floor earlier, maybe from the 17th century. This stone which now is placed in the wall has inscriptions on three sides. Another runestone in the church's wall. Very different from others that I have seen.

Foteviken:Now we must move on, otherwise we have to take the twice days of vacation. Arrived at Foteviken's museum at the Western coast of Sweden. In the background you see Faslterbo. |
They have built a Viking village here and they tried to get it as it once could have looked. More runestones, but are this real or fake? A copy of a small Viking boat. Now we enter the Viking village. Lot of small houses to look into. This is the blacksmith place. To the right is the bellows they use to blow more air into the oven to increase the temperature. Iron melts at 1500 Celsius degree.
A wheelbarrow, no rubber tire. |
Dinner waiting for us, chicken.
A defense tower in the background.
View from the tower over the village. The Vikings lived where there were sea, rivers or lakes. They use their ships when they travel. The Swedish Vikings could travel very far away, through the rivers of Russia down to Constantinople in Turkey. The Norwegian Vikings traveled to the island Iceland, Greenland, Canada and USA. Maybe this is a jail where they punished the criminals, but it could also be a grave. |

Smygehuk:We move on, now in Eastern direction to pick what we missed the rainy day earlier. Yesterday when we stopped at Kåseberga to see Ale's stones it was heavy rain. Now we go back to that place, but first we stop at Smygehuk, Sweden's most Southern place. On the other side of the sea we have Germany, about 60 km. The harbor of Smygehuk, lot of tourist here, some of them came by boat. Me at Smygehuk. There is a story that they drop this stone on the head of the thieves. After an ice cream it's time to go forward. More to read about Smygehuk at Wikipedia:
Kåseberga:At last, we are at Kåseberga where the Ale's stones are and there is no rain, perfect or? |
We find the small road that lead to the hill. Cliff climbing cows. Beautiful views with the sea in background. Oh ... what a lot of people, can't almost not see the stones. I run around the stones to find places without a lot of people blocking the views. Ales's stones are Sweden's biggest stone ship. Many of these where built during the Viking era. There are 59 stones in this stone ship (ship setting). The ship has a length of 60 meter.
Some people find that this must be a big calendar, lot of theories about this. |
The center stone, maybe it represent the mast of the ship. All these stones are reconstructed, they are not exact sure of the original place of them. The hill here is built up by sand and have created very steep cliff towards the sea. The wind coming from the sea change direction when it the cliff to upwards and it's perfect for hang gliding.
After many photos we start go back. As you see the hill is very steep down to the sea. The walkway to the left lead down to Kåseberga's harbor. We skipped that, we have to go north now. More to read about Kåseberga at Wikipedia:
After this we change direction again, we head North to visit Brösarps Backar once again. Lövestad:After mistake we came to Lövestad, we found an old train station and a locomotive.

Brösarps Backar:Back to Brösarps Backar, last time we didn't find any good place to stop at and taking photos. We came with the evening light, the golden hour. The hill we have found is where the Ravlunda church is placed. That was the last today, now we have to drive back to Everöd where we stayed two days earlier. We must come before 11 pm.
