One week by car at island of in Sardinia, 2017
Planning our Sardinia trip:We looked at the maps and cities on island of Sardinia. Found out it must be best to rent a car one week to have the possibility to reach all beautiful places and the archaeological areas that we want to see. We also have problem to estimate for how long to stay at each place. We only pre booked room the first three days, with the internet working for free in all Europe now it's much easier to do the rest of booking in just one day advance. There are plenty of room now when in low season and very cheap, about 45 Euro for a double room with breakfast per night. Olbia to Stintino, day 1 and 2: |
We felt no big disappointment to leave the rainy Sweden. This year must be one of the worst summer we ever had. Here we waiting at Arlanda airport to board our plane. We used the transfer Door To Gate service, it's the second time and it's very convenient. A minibus picks us up where we live and take us to the airport.
Above the clouds and not far away from our destination Sardinia. Olbia:We was a bit worried about the car we rent at Firefly, they said that they come and pickes us up at the airport and take us to their rental office. The clock was about nine pm in the evening and it was very dark. But we did as they told us, we made a call after landing and check out, after ten minutes they come. Then we had the car. We brought our own GPS with us, it was not so easy to find the address to the hotel Alessandro we had booked, no really big problem after one wrong drive we arrived at the hotel we found it to be as good that we expected it to be, really good. The pool that belongs to the hotel.
After had eaten a tasty breakfast we did a short plan how to go by the car this day. We didn't visit the city of Olbia, we took the road north and along the eastern coast. Spiaggia Bianca:A stop at Spiaggia Bianca, the beaches are something that Sardinia are very famous for, you will not be disappointed!

This was the car we rent, a Fiat Panda diesel, worked very well for us with no problems. We rent it at Firefly, never heard about that company earlier, but with great offer with free co-driver and low insurance cost we find it perfect for us and our needs. Cudacciolu:Close to village Cudacciolu there where a lot of archaeological excavations that we want to see. This tomb looks very much like those we have in Sweden, from about 16th to 12th century BC. Very exiting to see and compare with our own Swedish history.
Another place close by, this was maybe a forth, everything is round, typical for the people lived here from 19th to14th century BC, the Nuragic people.
Cannigione:Along the coast we pass the village Cannigione, here we come close to the coast again. More wonderful beaches.
|
Palau:A bit hungry we stopped in the coast village Palau for something to eat.
When walking along the harbor we found this beauty. In the restaurant we meet an English girl who bicycle around the island. She came by the ferry from Corsica island to here. We think her plan was to stay several weeks at Sardinia. We got a pizza slice and a toast with view over the harbor. Porto Rafael:We didn't stay long at Palau, just when we leaved we could see a fortress up the hill, we must get closer to it! Forth Rafael, it was not open but we get beautiful views over the hill and the bay.
Santa Teresa Gallura:Next stop, the beach at Santa Teresa Gallura, first place we see a few people swimming. Maybe they felt it's too cold in the water. They are not used with the Swedish climate :-)

Here starts a walkway around the peninsula where we are.
The walkway along the coast, we really want to take a walk here, but not time enough for that.
Now we drive along the northern coast, it start to be late and about 7 pm it get dark. We have at least two more places to visit before landing at Stintino.
Castelsardo:We have seen a sign about the Elephant Rock. There are not many cars out on the roads and we are as usual driving on the smaller roads in a slow pace. Sorry to say, the Elephant has lost his trunk! |
At Castelsardo we took a break and visit the fortress.
On the walk up to the summit where the fortress is we got this view over the bay and village, we came driving through the mountains in the background. Old city below fortress. Inside the fortress there was an exhibition about rotting baskets, they looks to be very famous here. Now we are leaving the fortress after a short walk in the alleys.
In the background you can see the island Corsica, not very far away. Porto Torres:Earlier stood here a Roman fort, village Porto Torres. It should also be a big old Roman bridge outside town, but we couldn't find it.
|
Stintino:Arriving in the dark at Stintino. After we had installed us at the hotel Asinara we took a walk to the restaurants in the central area of Stintino for a dinner. Not very far away, we was just about ten minutes walk away.
View over the small harbor from the restaurant. Our room at this hotel had a big balcony and we sat here in the night and looked at the moon shining over the sea in the bay.
