Day VII: Seven Springs and Lindos:This was supposed to be the last day before we going home, but we already on the second day got a message that our flight home was delayed. The rainy Wednesday we booked a bus tour to this day. The travel agency kindly arranged an extra tour for us and we shall visit the Seven Spring and Lindos. We was a bit nervous about this day, yesterday we got information that they shall have a strike at Lindos. But only in the morning, they changed the order of the tour and we visit the Seven Springs first and after that the strike at Lindos was over. What a terrific service we got! |
Map over the seventh day bus trip: (100 km bus tour at Rhodes island.) Seven Springs:We had read about Seven Springs but didn't know very much more then it's beautiful here. After we get off the mini bus that had picked us up at the hotel we start walking down to the waterfalls. We follow the river down the valley and count the the springs. It's very beautiful here and there is a restaurant at the falls. The rivers are not big as the ones as we have at Northern Sweden. We found all seven springs, they have put a sign with a number at them. This is a tunnel that goes through the mountain. For a not to big person it was possible to walk inside the tunnel to the other side. The water was cold and for me who is a bit tall this tunnel walking was no option. Halfway there is an opening. We could hear the tunnel walking people screaming down there, was one person stuck or? Here they came out on the other side, as mane people that entered the tunnel. |

Lindos town:The minibus take us to next stop, Lindos. I think Lindos must be the most famous place to visit at Rhodes. A small road lead us down to Lindos town.
The square at Lindos town. Now we must find the walkway up to ancient Lindos, you see it on the top of the mountain. There were donkey cabs you could take, but we walked because we want to take photos. Lot of narrows alleys, which one? Yes there is a sign, that helped us. A few steps more and we were out of the town. |
Great view over the Lindos town. The old harbor of Lindos. We enter the gate and came in to the old Lindos. Ancient Acropolis of Lindos:
A staircase lead us up to the wall where there is another gate with a tunnel. Imaging to visit this place in July, crowed with people and hot. Just before we enter the second gate. At Wikipedia there is more information about Lindos:
The tunnel lead us into ancient Lindos. Big walls protect the city. Just wonder how it looked when they started to excavated and restored Lindos. |
This is new stuff, relics from Roman era. The Greeks was here first! It looks to be fundaments, a ring of statues. Dedicated to Tiberius and his sons Drusus and Germanicus. The Doric temple of Athena Lindia, maybe 2300 years old. Your legs must have well trimmed muscles, long way down to the harbor and fish market. The lake donw there, could it from the quarry that delivered the stones? And how did they get those stones up here? A Hellenistic stoa. On the bases to the right stood bronze statues in honor of Zenodotos, 100 BC. Staircase of the Propylaea. |
This day was hot during daytime, maybe 25 degrees Celsius. Yeah, I know sometimes it's 45 degrees, but for us who are used with snow it's hot! Part of Lindos is 3000 years old. The bases in front hold statues of Zeus, Athena and Apollo, 4th BC.
A row of statues stood on these bases dedicated Polykles son of Polykrates. Votive semicircular exedra Pasiphon son of Epilykos. The most modern house, the Church of Ayios Ioannis, 12th century. A water cistern, or? Now we had walked around here for a couple of hours and feel we are finished with ancient Lindos. Is this the gate out? |
The gate lead us to a dark room, this is the staircase the sign told us about. Walked through the gate and down the staircase, here is also the remains of an older staircase. Look, what a beautiful Rhodian warship, honor of a naval victory, carved out in the rock 2100 years ago!
Donkey cab waiting, but we walked.

Back in Lindos town, we had our bus waiting and walked through. A last look back at the fantastic ancient Lindos. Rhodes city:After all these walk we are a need of a rest and something to eat and drink. We found this nice little restaurant close to our hotel. The owner spooked Swedish with us. After the dinner we decided to visit the the Northern harbor once again. Follow the alleys. Pepes Bodega, what! All Sweden people know the movie Sällskapsresan (the Vacation Travel) produced by Lars Åberg. A comedy of Swedish people on vacation in Southern Europe. Two of the drunk men looking for this place all the length of the movie. At Wikipedia there is more information about the movie Sällskapsresan:

One of the four towers, now we know they are windmills, or was. The Aquarium. A luxury cruiser leave Rhodes, maybe with our new American friends, I hope they write to us. This long we didn't came earlier, what is this? We walk up to the platform to have a view. There is something below the water surface. The opening into the Mandrake harbor. It's a bath, abounded it looks, or will they fill it up the following weeks? |
Nice entrance. Mandrake harbor:We had a very fine evening, but now time to walk back to the hotel. We took another road back, here we found the foundation of an old defense wall. Fat lazy cats. Nice looking building, is it a school house or?
