Day V: Rhodes city historical:Weather forecast has told us that this day will give us a lot of rain. Our plan was then to visit the Archaeological Museum of Rhodes. When we waked up we got the prof that weather forecast was correct. A short walk and we got to the historical museum. |
Map over the fifth day walk: (4 km walk in old Rhodes city.) Archaeological Museum of Rhodes:With our umbrellas we walk fast down to Old city and the archaeological museum. There was also another exhibition about old Rhodes city, but they haven't opened it yet for the season. Look promising for us, it will be a exciting day for us. What have they written here? Greek is not easy to understand, not even the letter are the same as we use.
The museum is host in a old building that once has been a hospital for the Knights.
This is a fundament for a statue. Many of statues were made of bronze and valuable, that's why only the foundation are left today.

Out in the rain to see what was out there. A soldier whit a snake wrap around him, we see these snakes in many places, must have been important. |
Floor with a fantastic mosaic. A lion guard the museum.
Another snake.
Balls to the catapult weapons. They where all over the Rhodes. At Wikipedia there is more information about Catapult weapon:
After many ours walk we looked for a restaurant for food and a rest, not far from the museum we find something perfect for this day. Hippocrates fountain:Hippocrates fountain. |
Marine Gate:A look through the main gate, Marine Gate. An anchored Cruiser behind the France Tower. Marine Gate from outside, even if they called it the main gate it was very narrow. Back once again at the Socrates Fountain. To the left is a photo shop, we stay there for long and talk to the owner, he was very interested in Astronomy. Sea Horse Fountain:Rhodes all fountains are very famous. List of fountains in Greece, Wikipedia:
Church of the Virgin of the Burgh:

Freedom Gate:
Church Panagia Tis Nikis:Now we had come to the most Northeast part of the old town. To the left we have the Gate of Saint Catherine, we walked through that gate out to the harbor. The port in front of France Tower where we had the Crusier. Ruins of windmills, in 400 years old maps we could see that it was a lot of them at this harbor. Akandia Gate:
From here, Southeast of the old city there is an entrance to the fortification. We had seen it from above and now we want to walk along it. Italy Tower:Balls, balls and balls, the have these catapult balls everywhere. |
One of the abandoned Italian houses we have read about?
We walked and walked, will it never end? You can follow our walk at the map on this page from Wikipedia:
Here are the second defense wall, in some places there are three layers of defense walls. Tower of Spain:The system of defense walls are very complex, to the left is the Tower of Spain. We could see a lot of these entrances to tunnels. Bastion of Saint George:
|
Gate D'Amboise:
We looked for a tunnel or staircase to enter the city, no one to find. Keep on walking. Knights weapon we could see on the walls, maybe different Knights who built part of the defense walls. At last, after one hour walk we got to the Northern Liberty Gate and came out from the defense walls. What a long walk! Walk home to our hotel for a rest and then as usual look for a restaurant for the evening meal. Find one nice restaurant as usual. We like Rhodes :-)
