Rhodes, island of Greece, 2019

Day III: Rhodes Mandraki harbor and Filerimos:

Today we plan to visit the Athena temple in Filerimos. To that place we can take a local bus, the bus stop is just outside our hotel. But first we take a walk down to the Mandraki Harbor.

Breakfast at hotel:

One week at Rhodes, 2019

Always welcome, a breakfast buffet, this is not our hotel, we had to walk 200 meters down the street. It was a bit cold to sit outside, but from inside we have a great view over the pool area.

Back to our hotel and up to the room and change clothes. We expect it to be hot later during the day.

Rhodes Mandraki Harbor:

Mandraki Harbor is only 700 meters walk away.

Map over the third day first walk:

(These walking maps are not exactly how we walked)

The famous Mandraki port.

There are some theories that the Colossus statue stood here at the harbor.

At Wikipedia you find more information about the Colossus of Rhodes:

On the other side there is a similar statue.

The fountain in front of the Evangelismos church, Fontana Grande.

Filerimos:

Local bus to Trianta:

One week at Rhodes, 2019

Our idea was to take the local bus to Trianta and from there walk up the hill to Filerimos. Here we had come to the center of Trianta, the big square.

One week at Rhodes, 2019

Maybe a market place.

At Wikipedia you find more information about Ialysos / Trianta:

We had now started our walk to Filerimos, follow the narrow alleys.

A church, maybe Kimisi, it's not easy to find information about what we see.

One week at Rhodes, 2019

Now we leave the center of Trianta.

One week at Rhodes, 2019

Out on the village, these wind water pumps we see a lot of all over the Rhodes.

One week at Rhodes, 2019

Gunilla said, Oh.. look it's a bush, at home have them as small flowers in a pot. It's not fair!

One week at Rhodes, 2019

At last we got a glimpse of the hill where we have Filerimos. Maybe a bit far away, we come back later when we have rent a car.

On the way back I found this interesting machine, but what is it, an olive press, or?

One week at Rhodes, 2019

Trianta was a nice little town to walk in.

One week at Rhodes, 2019

At the main road we found a cafe to sit and waiting for the bus back to Rhodes city. We had little problem to understand the time schedule of the busses.

One week at Rhodes, 2019

Hey, it's beautiful here, let us get of the bus and take a walk the last way.

One week at Rhodes, 2019

The second day when we took a walk up to Acropolis we walked up on that hill. From there we saw this beautiful beach and maybe a walkway along the coast. That's the walkway we looking for now.

One week at Rhodes, 2019

Now we has walked about one km since we get of the bus and looking back. In the background a lot of big tourist hotels. Gunilla lived there when she visited Rhodes in the 1970s, maybe my father too some years later.

A look through the gate into the Historical museum. We visited this museum two days later on Wednesday when it was heavy rains.

One week at Rhodes, 2019

There shall be a place where we can see the oldest fortification walls of the city, from the Byzantine time. We go through these alleys when searching for them.

One week at Rhodes, 2019

Here it is, it's hard to find information, but these walls was built by the Byzantine people from 7th to 13th century.

One week at Rhodes, 2019

At the end of Socratous street we have the Suleymaniye Mosque.

At Wikipedia you find more information about the Suleymaniye Mosque:

The Clock tower, the Clock Tower's foundation is the Southwest corner of the old Byzantine fortification.

One week at Rhodes, 2019

These balconies we have seen in many Southern European old cities.

One week at Rhodes, 2019

Now it is getting late and we have to find a place to eat.

Looking for the shortest way out of town, follow the sign to Socratous street.

One week at Rhodes, 2019

Socratous square.

One week at Rhodes, 2019

We are now heading for the Freedom Gate in North.

One week at Rhodes, 2019

On the way we found this square.

One week at Rhodes, 2019

At the center of the square we found another ruin down in the pit, this has maybe been a church.

One week at Rhodes, 2019

Almost at Freedom Gate.

One week at Rhodes, 2019

Back at our October Street.

One week at Rhodes, 2019
