Day III: Rhodes Mandraki harbor and Filerimos:Today we plan to visit the Athena temple in Filerimos. To that place we can take a local bus, the bus stop is just outside our hotel. But first we take a walk down to the Mandraki Harbor. |
Breakfast at hotel:Always welcome, a breakfast buffet, this is not our hotel, we had to walk 200 meters down the street. It was a bit cold to sit outside, but from inside we have a great view over the pool area. Back to our hotel and up to the room and change clothes. We expect it to be hot later during the day. Rhodes Mandraki Harbor:Mandraki Harbor is only 700 meters walk away. Map over the third day first walk: (These walking maps are not exactly how we walked) The famous Mandraki port. At the harbor we also have the Evangelismos church.
There are some theories that the Colossus statue stood here at the harbor. At Wikipedia you find more information about the Colossus of Rhodes:
On the other side there is a similar statue. The fountain in front of the Evangelismos church, Fontana Grande. |
Filerimos:Local bus to Trianta: Our idea was to take the local bus to Trianta and from there walk up the hill to Filerimos. Here we had come to the center of Trianta, the big square. Maybe a market place. At Wikipedia you find more information about Ialysos / Trianta:
We had now started our walk to Filerimos, follow the narrow alleys. A church, maybe Kimisi, it's not easy to find information about what we see. Now we leave the center of Trianta. Out on the village, these wind water pumps we see a lot of all over the Rhodes. Gunilla said, Oh.. look it's a bush, at home have them as small flowers in a pot. It's not fair! At last we got a glimpse of the hill where we have Filerimos. Maybe a bit far away, we come back later when we have rent a car. |

On the way back I found this interesting machine, but what is it, an olive press, or? Trianta was a nice little town to walk in. At the main road we found a cafe to sit and waiting for the bus back to Rhodes city. We had little problem to understand the time schedule of the busses. Hey, it's beautiful here, let us get of the bus and take a walk the last way. The second day when we took a walk up to Acropolis we walked up on that hill. From there we saw this beautiful beach and maybe a walkway along the coast. That's the walkway we looking for now. Now we has walked about one km since we get of the bus and looking back. In the background a lot of big tourist hotels. Gunilla lived there when she visited Rhodes in the 1970s, maybe my father too some years later.

Yes! Here it is, the beach walk. Deep blue water with the turquoise color in front of us. The waves of the water form the rocks quickly when eroding. All Greek we had talked to says, we newer had this much rain, but look what green Rhodes has been.
A staircase down to the sea. We are almost alone on this walk, wait a week or two and it will be crowded here. |
Now we can see Rhodes city in the background. The staircase lead up to the road, we think it was a chapel up there too. Rhodes city:The city beach, a lot of work is going on here to have the beach ready when all tourists comes next week. They have a tractor that cleans the sand from bottles and other unwanted stuff. Just two brave girls bathing here, maybe the girls are Scandinavian as we are?
To the left after the white building is the October street where we have our hotel. Back to the hotel for a short rest and drawing new plans for the next tourist place we shall visit. Rhodes old town:We decided to go back to old town of Rhodes. Here we are in front of Freedom gate, to the right. |
One more look at the ruins of maybe an old city defense wall. We see a circular shaped foundation and some vaste drains. In center some portal.
The Auberge of the Langue of Auvergne. Historical museum:A look through the gate into the Historical museum. We visited this museum two days later on Wednesday when it was heavy rains. There shall be a place where we can see the oldest fortification walls of the city, from the Byzantine time. We go through these alleys when searching for them. Here it is, it's hard to find information, but these walls was built by the Byzantine people from 7th to 13th century. At the end of Socratous street we have the Suleymaniye Mosque. At Wikipedia you find more information about the Suleymaniye Mosque:
The Clock tower, the Clock Tower's foundation is the Southwest corner of the old Byzantine fortification. I wish I had more links of information to offer the readers, but they are hard to find in English. |
A walk at the streets around the Clock tower. This ramp leading us up to the Clock tower, but it was always closed when we was nearby. View over the Mosque seen from the Clock tower. Palace of the Grand Master of the Knights of Rhodes. Later a rainy day we will be back and visit this Palace. According to the map we are close to a Roman ruin now, but where?
Here it is. Roman Public Building of the Agora. Typical Roman foundation or is it Greek? It's ancient Roman says Gunilla, the Greek foundation are more square! |
These balconies we have seen in many Southern European old cities. Now it is getting late and we have to find a place to eat. Looking for the shortest way out of town, follow the sign to Socratous street. Socratous square. We are now heading for the Freedom Gate in North. On the way we found this square. At the center of the square we found another ruin down in the pit, this has maybe been a church. Almost at Freedom Gate. Back at our October Street. That restaurant looks nice, lets us visit it for a dinner! After the meal we can go back to our hotel, just across the street.
