Day IV: Faliraki and Astronomy Cafe:A new day, it starts with rain, not very much and we decided to visit Faliraki. About 15 km South of Rhodes City on the Eastern coast. We have also read that it's here we find the Astronomy Cafe. Maybe not open but still interesting to visit it, if we are lucky we maybe see something of the inside of the Astronomy Cafe. |
Map over the fourth day bus tour: (Faliraki is only 15 km away by bus / car.) Rhodes City bus terminal:Already the evening before we talked with the staff at the bus station how to go with bus to Faliraki. Easy, just a local bus to the cost of 2.8 Euro each. We didn't have to wait very long time until the bus arrived. You find the bus terminal just outside the old town. Northeast of the Freedom Gate. Faliraki:The bus driver explain for us that the bus stop is in the center of Faliraki close to the beach. It has now stopped rain. Faliraki bus stop, only 200 meters from the sea. At Wikipedia you find more information about Faliraki:
We looked around to see which way we shall take. It started to rain again, but we brought the umbrellas with us. Walk from Failiraki beach to Astronomy Cafe: The map is not correct, the first part we walked along the beach and the last walk to the Astronomy Cafe we followed the roads. Change to satellite mode and you will see. We decided to walk on the sandy beach. A tractor is pulling out new sand on the beach. As you see we are at the beginning or before the tourist invasion. No one here. One strand cafe that's open, one of few that's open.

Now we are closing in to the old fishing harbor.
The boats are waiting for the tourists, we hope they get a lot of them. A robotic lawnmower. |
Finished with the beach and start looking for a road up the hill where the Astronomy Cafe is placed. A sign helped us. Up at the hill we got this fantastic view over Faliraki. Astronomy Cafe:First glimpse of the Astronomy Cafe, we see two cars so maybe there are people here. We were lucky, the friendly owner Stergo and his wife were here. We even got a guided tour around the observatory. Stergo has built everything here and it's very nice even for those who are not very interested in Astronomy. If you find it interesting with astronomy I have wrote more about the observatory Astronomy Cafe here. Two m3 of sand grains correspond to our galaxy Milky Way's stars.
Behind the Astronomy Cafe is the Anthony Quinn's beach, Anthony was a famous movie star. At Wikipedia you find more information about Anthony:

Now back to Faliraki center and something to eat and then the bus back home.
Now we just have to find an open cafe or restaurant. At last, this restaurant was open. We eat a Greek Salad and an Omelette. When we took the bus back home we didn't take the local bus, we had to walk up to the main road and search for another bus stop. We have lost all ours phone booths in Sweden many years ago, nice to see one again. At the bus stop, after twenty minutes our bus arrived as it should. |
Rhodes City:Back to hotel, a rest and then out at the streets again. This time we took a walkway through a park to the old city. We found more old wonderful abandoned houses.
Pythagoras home, or? Famous ancient Greek mathematicians, Wikipedia:
When walking along Papaloukas street we find this, a defense tower or a windmill? I think it's a windmill, it has the same kind of door that we have seen on other windmills. We pass through another park, this is an archaeological park.
|
One of the abandoned Italian houses we have read about? Ancient City of Rhodes:The defense walls of Ancient City of Rhodes. To the right St. Georges Bastion, in background the clock tower and the mosque.
After we had walk around the park outside the old city walls we walk into the ancient city through the Gate D'Aboise. Here are the second defense wall, in some places there are three layers of defense walls. St. Anthony's Gate. Turkish School with ruins to the left of the conventual church of the Knights Hospitaller, St. John of the Collachio.
|
It getting dark quickly now and we try to find the way back to the hotel. After we had left the ancient city we looked back and got this beautiful view of the towers. Gate into a park where we found Parko Therme. Exhausted and in emergent need of a rest and food we found this little nice restaurant, almost next door to our hotel.
