Planning our Rhodes trip:

This time we booked the flight and hotel room separate to have it more how we like it. Close to old town of Rhodes.

Google Map over Rhodes:

Day I: Arriving to Rhodes:

Airport Rhodes:

One week at Rhodes, 2019

But what is this, rain! Wasn't rain a big reason why we travel to Rhodes to not have?

Actually the weather forecast has warning us that it could be rain the whole week at Rhodes.

Rhodes Town:

One week at Rhodes, 2019

We arrived about 6 pm to Rhodes town where we had our hotel. Jump of the bus nearby and a fast walk to the hotel. Took a rest for one hour and changed clothes. Then we was ready for a short walk in center of city where we lived. Found a restaurant with tasty food, it still was heavy rain and after the dinner we went back to the hotel to plan the day coming.

At Wikipedia you find more information about Rhodes:

Day 2: Rhodes Ancient City and Akropolis:

Rhodes Town:

We wake up with the sunshine, all the rain was gone. Quick up and walked to the breakfast room, we were served it next door at another hotel. We got a great breakfast buffet, we was not sure of that, just thought it could be only bread and coffee.

Map over the second day first walk:

(These walking maps are not exactly how we walked)

One week at Rhodes, 2019

Today we start with a visit to Rhodes Akropolis, it's very close Southeast to Rhodes Town. First we go East to the beach to find the street that led us to the hill where Akropolis is.

One week at Rhodes, 2019

On that hill in the background we know that Akropolis is placed. A walk of 2 km maybe.

One week at Rhodes, 2019

Along the streets we walked we found a lot of abounded houses.

One week at Rhodes, 2019

Someone told us that it could be difficult when the owner die and who is the correct heir of the house, a process that can take ten years or more! Sad to see these beautiful old houses in this shape.

One week at Rhodes, 2019

After a while we got a glimpse out over the ocean, beautiful colors of the sea.

Akropolis:

One week at Rhodes, 2019

Now we are not far away from Akropolis.

One week at Rhodes, 2019

What makes the turquise color, coral reef or something about the sand on the bottom?

One week at Rhodes, 2019

Just before we reach Akropolis we found this, a holy cave, Nymphaea.

One week at Rhodes, 2019

From above we got to look into the cave, it was also a staircase leading down there, but closed today.

One week at Rhodes, 2019

First sign of Akropolis, a pillar.

One week at Rhodes, 2019

Beautiful view from top of the hill. Down there is a walkway along the beach that we will visit later the following days.

One week at Rhodes, 2019

Akropolis of Rhodes, the pillars in the background is the temple of Apollo. We couldn't get loser to it because of renovation works.

One week at Rhodes, 2019

We think it must be a lot of ancient building parts buried here in the ground.

At Wikipedia you find more information about Acropolis of Rhodes:

One week at Rhodes, 2019

Below is the theatre Odeon and the Ancient Stadium to the right in the shadows.

One week at Rhodes, 2019

An impressive staircase led us down to the Ancient Stadium.

One week at Rhodes, 2019

Ancient Stadium, very well preserved. Open at one end. People like to walk and run around this Stadium even today.

One week at Rhodes, 2019

Openings in the wall to the Stadium, maybe for a sliding door.

One week at Rhodes, 2019

The Odeon theatre, restored in later years.

One week at Rhodes, 2019

Now we heading for the ancient Rhodes, along the walk we passed this collection of old building stones.

One week at Rhodes, 2019

A new sign stopped us, A Hellenistic house. That's something we must see.

One week at Rhodes, 2019

A Greek gentleman showed us how to find it, he walked in a rapid pace around the blocks. After a while we reached a street with old houses. Hmm ... is this really the house we looking for?

One week at Rhodes, 2019

After consulting the map we found a walkpath behind the houses. At last we found the Hellenistic house, barely seen through the high grass. Maybe once as impressive as the red house above.

One week at Rhodes, 2019

We continue our walk to the ancient town of Rhodes. Along the way we pass the ancient park.

One week at Rhodes, 2019

Very high grass, the only old thing we got to see was this staircase, old but not ancient we think.

One week at Rhodes, 2019

After had walked along roads with heavy traffic we found this alley parallel with that road. We talked with each other, a Greek man hear us and ask if he could help us and asked where we come from. We told him that we came from Sweden and he got happy, he told us about when he visited Sweden long time ago. He was a musician and he had played at the Swedish restaurants.

Map over the second day second walk into ancient Rhodes:

One week at Rhodes, 2019

We left the alley and walked through a park and then suddenly we stood in front of the ancient city defense walls.

One week at Rhodes, 2019

This is the outer walls and built maybe of the knights in the 15 century. Very big and impressive.

One week at Rhodes, 2019

To the left there is a bridge leading into the city.

One week at Rhodes, 2019

Enter the city from this bridge. This is the Gate of Saint Athanasius.

One week at Rhodes, 2019

Inside the walls we come to narrow alleys, not very much commercials here, more like living blocks. Today there are 6000 people living here inside the defense walls.

One week at Rhodes, 2019

The alley opens up at a square.

One week at Rhodes, 2019

We have now walked a lot and it could be nice to find a place to have a rest and maybe something to eat. A big square with an old mosque, this is the Recep Pasha mosque.

One week at Rhodes, 2019

What a good felling to sit down for a while, the cat looks happy too to have a rest. We took an ice cream and a cup of coffee. At this cafe we meet a man and women from England. They lived far away from here and had took the bus to visit the ancient Rhodes.

One week at Rhodes, 2019

There are a lot of famous fountains in ancient Rhodes city. This is the Hippocrates square.

One week at Rhodes, 2019

We saw a sign with a Roman old ruin house. Of course we must see it. Back in the alleys and search for it.

One week at Rhodes, 2019

Here we have found it, Roman Triconch building. For people who are not interested in history, it is perhaps more like a pit with stones in it.

One week at Rhodes, 2019

Now we want to see the harbor and ocean. You see the gate in the background.

One week at Rhodes, 2019

On the the way we pass the Church of the Virgin of the Burgh, maybe from 14th century. We could read that a big area of the Southern ancient city was hit by bombs during the WW II.

One week at Rhodes, 2019

Gate of Virgin, this is a new gate built by the Italians to let in modern traffic.

At Wikipedia you find more information about Fortifications of Rhodes:

Have an extra look at the old map from 1490.

One week at Rhodes, 2019

A beach in the city. The two towers with red tops in the background are not defense towers, they are ruins of windmills. The big tower to the left is Tower of France.

One week at Rhodes, 2019

We walk back into the city again through the Marine Gate, this is the main gate of the fortification.

One week at Rhodes, 2019

This is the Knight Road, long and empty. But up there are a lot of nice restaurants, also the Palace of the Grand Master of the Knights is up there to the right, behind the gate.

One week at Rhodes, 2019

Another fountain, this is the Square of the Hebrew Martyrs. Some days later when we walk by this square it was a film team here.

One week at Rhodes, 2019

The Auberge of the Langue of Auvergne.

One week at Rhodes, 2019

Maybe a part of an older defense wall.

One week at Rhodes, 2019

We had just walked out from the ancient city through the Freedom Gate in Northeast. In front the Gate of Saint Paul and in the background to the right we have the Naillac tower.

I wish I had more links of information to offer the readers, but they are hard to find in English.

One week at Rhodes, 2019

Any plans to sailing to Rhodes?

One week at Rhodes, 2019

Now we was very tired and our legs hurts. But I said, in front of us we had the famous windmills, they are on every postcards from Rhodes. We must walk out there and have a look. And there we go.

One week at Rhodes, 2019

There are three windmills and one person told us that one of them are in use to let the tourist see how it works.

One week at Rhodes, 2019

At the end of the pier is the Fort of St. Nicholas that guards the Mandraki harbor.

One week at Rhodes, 2019

Now we must go back to the hotel and have a rest. We passing by the old market Mandraki, now only restaurants here.

One week at Rhodes, 2019

We walked past a pizza restaurant and that reminded us the we needed energy before we taking a rest at the hotel, a pineapple pizza!

One week at Rhodes, 2019

And Greek beer, it tasted very good!

One week at Rhodes, 2019

This is our hotel, Angela Suites, it has a pool on the backside and we had a room with balcony.

Map over the second day, evening walk to north bay:

After we had recovered after our rest we once again took a walk, an evening walk. This time we walk to the Northern bay.

One week at Rhodes, 2019

More of these towers, first we thought they were defense towers, but they must be old windmills.

One week at Rhodes, 2019

The darkness comes quickly when you are at southern latitudes. At this time of the year about half past seven.

One week at Rhodes, 2019

Rhodes Aquarium, we didn't visit it, we had already been at Lisbon's aquarium and that was very big.

One week at Rhodes, 2019

On the way back we passed by the Rhodes Casino, a very big house.

One week at Rhodes, 2019

We found a narrow alley back to our hotel, we fall asleep early this second day at Rhodes. A day on our vacation is a lot more harder than a working day!
