Day VI: Athena Temple, Ancient Kameiros and Kallithea:This day, the sixth we had decided to visit the ancient Kameiros. We didn't fins any practical local bus or bus tour. We booked a car yesterday and with a car we can do a lot of other visits too. |
Map over the sixth day car trip: (150 km drive in Rhodes island.) Mountain Filerimos and Athena Temple:Today we have plenty of time. We revisit Trianda or Ialysos once again to see the Athena Temple that we never came to with our earlier local bus trip. In front of we have the mountain Filerimos where the Athena Temple is. At Wikipedia there is more information about Ialysos:
Great view from the car when driving up the steep road. Ruins after an older part of Monastery of Filerimos we think and behind the Athena Temple, we take a closer look from behind later. There are not many signs with information, if you want the details, buy a book before visit Rhodes. A cross of stones, maybe belong to the Monastery.
Behind the Monastery there is a cliff with a breath taking view. |

Via Dolorosa, Way of the Cross.
Here we had entered the Athena Temple from behind and got a better view. Up the hill here once stood the Acropolis of ancient Ialysos. Ruins after a Byzantine church, about 10th century. Time for us to move further, now we take direction at Kameiros and its ancient Acropolis. |
Ancient Acropolis Kameiros:A big advantages to travel in the beginning if the season is that you find free parking lots. Parking the car and walk up to the ruins. We have seen so many different spells of this place: Kamiros, Kameiros, Camirus .... A pile of stones, in the 1960s it was an earthquake here. The four columns on the top of the hill fell down. Could this be parts of that columns?
For sure something interesting to read, but what have they written translated to English? At Wikipedia there is more information about Kameiros:
A Greek inscription on a column. |
The Hierothyteion. A bath maybe, great sea view from it. The ancient Kameiros is placed along the slop from the hill. Along the sides you can see more ruins that's not excavated yet.
Behind the acropolis is a deep green valley. This is a fresh water cistern. From here there where water pipes that connect to the ancient city. It were here the columns stood before they felt down during the earthquake in the 1960s. Maybe they will restore the columns? |
Water cistern. Now we walking down the long staircase and back to our car. The Hellenistic houses. In the Hellenistic house they have built support for the fragile columns. This villa has many rooms, a rich man's house. Fountain square, as we have seen in Rhodes city too.
Beach restaurant:Already when we come to this place we noticed a nice beach restaurant. We have been out and driving and visit two ancient places, time for lunch. It's full action here to built up everything before the tourist invasion. Now we don't have any ready plans, but have sign signs of a Vine road and also someone told us that they were nice to drive along. |
Platania:Nearby Platania we found something very exiting. What an impressive house ruins. Now we understand that this is houses from the Italian period, from 1912 to 1948.
We walked around in the ruins, we hope that they in the future restore these beautiful buildings.

We have read the the Italian started there own agricultures at Rhodes. What a fabulous mosaic.
Psinthos:In the middle of the day it was hot, we longing for an ice cream. In the small villages Psinthos we found lot of small restaurants at the square. The man who owns the restaurant told us that he had a friend in Sweden who lived here a lot of years and doing paints.

We still had some hours that we could use the car, what to do? Springs of Kallithea:We had read of some springs in Kallithea, maybe some interesting for us to visit? It was not far away. Park the car and walking down to the beach, we found this. Same rectangular shaped holes in the rock as we have seen at Malta. Strange, are they natural, or? After this we crossed the island to the west and then head home to the hotel. It was not easy for us to find a parking lot where we could leave the car, the rental came and meet us for an inspection of the car and take care of the parking problem. We learned, where there are painted blue lines on the streets there is free parking, if you can found one!
