My travel in Europe:
Lanzarote, island of Spain, 2020

Content:

Day V: By car to Jameos del Aqua, Cueva de los Verdes, Orzola, Mirador del Rio:

The first days on Lanzarote we have traveled by bus or walk, now what's left are far more away. We booked a car yesterday evening which was the most practical. We just rent it for one day to not have any parking problem.

Google Map over today's car drive of Northern Lanzarote:

Today's car tour, 113 km.

Puerto del Carmen:

One week at Lanzarote, Spain 2020

We have much to see today and get up already at 8 for breakfast. The car we rented is parked just a few blocks away. We paid 40 Euro for one day with full insurance. A day with public busses cost more for two persons so not bad. The GPS guide us out on the road LZ-40 that take us North.

Jameos del Agua:

One week at Lanzarote, Spain 2020

We arrived at Jameos del Agau twenty minutes before they opening. We used that time to go down to the beach, a popular wind surfing beach.

The building where the entrance to the lava tunnels is.

One week at Lanzarote, Spain 2020

This is a collapsed lava tunnel, they can be many km long.

This volcano is the origin for the lava tunnels here, 5 km away.

10 o clock and they open, we bought a triple ticket and save almost one, paid 22 Euro each. I bought them and got more practice, 'dos boletos, por favor' and pointed to the triple alternative, the Spanish is not perfect yet.

Compare to the lava tunnel we saw at the beach this one is huge. Down here is a restaurant, we sit down for a while to have something to drink, a coffee and a Coca Cola. The atmosphere here is wonderful with soft music.

Part of the tunnel have collapsed and let the sunshine come in.

One week at Lanzarote, Spain 2020

After we finished our drinks we go down deeper in the tunnel.

What a wonderful view over the water filled tunnel.

The small white dots are dead scrimps. The scrimps that live here are unique, they are very sensitive and the last survivors of this specie.

An opening in the roof give a fantastic light.

One week at Lanzarote, Spain 2020

The tunnel must at least be ten meters wide. Once flow melted rock here.

One week at Lanzarote, Spain 2020

The exit, but first we must see the concert hall.

One week at Lanzarote, Spain 2020

There were no concert today, but they played soft music and we sat down some minutes and listening.

Now you have one more reason to take a trip to Lanzarote !

At Wikipedia you find more information about Jameos del Agua:

Cueva de los Verdes:

One week at Lanzarote, Spain 2020

We take the car one km towards the volcano to the next stop, Cueva de los Verdes. A guide told us the the name Verdes (green) doesn't came from the color of the rocks but the people who lived here.

One week at Lanzarote, Spain 2020

Now we use our second ticket of the triple we bought.

One week at Lanzarote, Spain 2020

In this cave you are not allowed to enter without a guide, the tunnels are more then 6 km long and continue below the sea.

One week at Lanzarote, Spain 2020

It's dark down here, we also felt it was nice to escape the sunshine for a while. The temperature down here was about 17 degrees Celsius.

One week at Lanzarote, Spain 2020

Another part of the tunnel that has collapsed.

One week at Lanzarote, Spain 2020

The people who lived here use these tunnels to hide in when they were attacked by pirates and slave traders. There was also a rumor that a pirate buried his treasure here. We didn't see any gold.

One week at Lanzarote, Spain 2020

It looks a bit dangerous with the rock hanging in the roof, no helmets on !

One week at Lanzarote, Spain 2020

We continue and go even deeper down in the cave.

One week at Lanzarote, Spain 2020

Think about it, once 1200 degrees Celsius hot lava flow here, that was 3000 years ago.

One week at Lanzarote, Spain 2020

We follow a narrow passage with only one meter height at the narrowest passage.

One week at Lanzarote, Spain 2020

Another concert hall. I had a lot use of my new camera lens in these tunnels. It's very dark but with the lens image stabilizing system the photos still look very good. The camera is heavy, how many times have I not thought to only bring the mobile camera. But at places like these I'm glad to have it with me !

One week at Lanzarote, Spain 2020

Now we goes toward the end, we have been in the tunnels for almost one hour.

One week at Lanzarote, Spain 2020

Out in the sunshine again, very exiting place.

One week at Lanzarote, Spain 2020

A short stop at the white beach, more of Sahara's desert sand.

Orzola:

One week at Lanzarote, Spain 2020

Now it's lunch time and we need something to eat. We see on the map that there is a small village along the coast, Orzola.

One week at Lanzarote, Spain 2020

A nice little coast village with a fishing harbor, one of the fishing boats comes in while we stood here watching. There were many restaurants here to choose, we eat bruschetta with tomatoes and cheese, we also ordered a big 1.5 bottle of water, it's hot today too.

At Wikipedia you find more information about Orzola:

One week at Lanzarote, Spain 2020

The black rock here is the beginning of the mountain where the view point is that we shall visit now, Mirador del Rio.

Mirador del Rio:

One week at Lanzarote, Spain 2020

We have read on the internet that this view point is breath taking, what do you think ?

One week at Lanzarote, Spain 2020

The most spectacular view point is from inside of the cave. Here is the entrance and we used our third and last part of the triple ticket.

One week at Lanzarote, Spain 2020

This is the nearby island La Graciosa, that's is the island where the ferries go to from coast village Orzola we just visited.

At Wikipedia you find more information about La Graciosa:

Panorama view over the island and ocean.

One week at Lanzarote, Spain 2020

The Mirador del Rio mountain is 475 meters high. You really feel it when looking down.

One week at Lanzarote, Spain 2020

One week at Lanzarote, Spain 2020

A last view of La Graciosa and then we continue our travel.

A long serpentine road take us up to the mountain summit. We have now done all places that we want to visit according to our list.

One week at Lanzarote, Spain 2020

We stop when we see something interesting. This is one of them, a view to Eastern and the Atlantic ocean.

One week at Lanzarote, Spain 2020

Now it's time to go back, we take the road LZ-30 that take us to the village Masdache and then back to Puerto del Carmen.

Puerto del Carmen:

One week at Lanzarote, Spain 2020

Back to Puerto del Carmen, we left the car to the rental and walk back to the hotel. A two hours rest and then out in the evening for a dinner. When we walk to the restaurant we see the moonshine cruiser boat we read about.

One week at Lanzarote, Spain 2020
