My travel in Europe:
|
One week by walk, bus, boat and car at island of Malta, 2018 |
Local bus to Mdina, day 3: |
Sliema:We are now aware how to use the busses to get to the places we want. This bus could get us a round trip in the Three Cities, but that wasn't the plan for today. Another old good looking bus, maybe from 1950s. Mdina:Now we have come to Mdina city, earlier this has been the capital city of Malta. This square is where the busses stop, I don't think this is the Mdina main station, this is more far away.
First we want to see the Roman villa, just cross the road. We bought a 12 Euro multi ticket that let us in to the other attractions also.
The mosaic floor and sculptures was fantastic to see. Next stop was to see the fortress, just a couple of hundreds meter away. There was many entrances to the fortification, this is not the main one.
Lots of narrow alleys.

A view point over the landscape above the walls, this is in the North East direction. The view is almost 180 degrees. We think it's Saint Julian with the high tower and Valletta to the right of the tower in the background. As most old fortress thy have been rebuilt during the years, this one year 870, 1000, 1400 and 1700, sure many more times.
To the left the tourist information and to the right the Natural History Museum. That are our second place to visit. To the left entrance to the museum. We found interesting information, the sea level 18000 years ago was 160 meter lower, then it was possibly to walk over to Sicilia. They have also found skeletons from elephants and rhinoceros in the caves here in Malta from that time. |
These stairs lead us up to a view over the inner courtyard. A very beautiful courtyard.
The last thing for us to see in Mdina is the Saint Pauls Catacombs. We have to take a longer walk to find them. We follow the map through the alleys. Some celebrations today, or? First sign of Saint Paul Catacombs. |
More alleys to follow, even when we was close we had trouble to find the entrance of the catacombs. After we have bought tickets and enter the catacomb area you enter the catacombs through openings like this, it must have been more then fifteen of them.
Very narrow passages was carved out in the rock. It wasn't allowed to go down more then 6 people here at the same time. The tombs were like small bathtubs carved out of the mountain.
Now we just have to find the way back to the bus stop. Was it left or right? Waiting for the bus. When it came it was almost full, it wasn't very convenient to stand up when the bus did hard brakes and sharp turns. Some advices from people here was that we shall take the bus from the end station. Sliema:Back to Sliema and our hotel. This evening we had the Moon rising in front of us, I have done some time lapse videos that you can watch later on.
