Meteorites
Walk among meteorites at
Naturhistoriska Riksmuseet

When doing astrophotography you buy more and more advanced cameras and telescopes to get a better glimpse of what's out there. Are there any alternatives? Yes, you can come closer to the objects, this day we took the subway to the Nature History Museum in Stockholm. At this museum you can find meteorites, you can get as close that you can touch them, no need of a telescope !

Iron Meteorite, Arizona

Meteorites, Naturhistoriska Riksmuseet 2019
Meteorite type : Iron
Age : It crashed on Earth 50'000 years ago, but the iron meteor is much older
Found at : Arizona, USA, Barringer Crater
Site : Naturhistoriska Riksmuseet, Sweden, Stockholm, Frescati
Comment : In 2019 the Swedish Nature Museum had an open day. It was about geology and among that meteorites. I have visited some meteorite impacts (craters) in Sweden, but now I can see what cause them (but very much bigger).

Iron Meteorite, Siberia

Meteorites, Naturhistoriska Riksmuseet 2019
Meteorite type : Iron
Age : 4'600'000'000 years old, older than the Earth !
Found at : Siberia 1947, Russia, Sikhote-Alin_meteorite
Site : Naturhistoriska Riksmuseet, Sweden, Stockholm, Frescati
Comment : It was only 72 years ago since this meteorite fell down on Earth. I couldn't resist to touch the meteorite, think about it, holding your hand on something that's older than our Earth ! I put my finger into the holes to investigate if they where like bullets holes, no, it was more like something that had evaporated out from it. And yes, it was allowed to touch it and I didn't get transformed to a little green man either.

Iron Meteorite, Sweden

Meteorites, Naturhistoriska Riksmuseet 2019
Meteorite type : Iron, mass (weight) 300 kg
Age : Impact on Earth 10'000 years ago, this piece was found as late as 2005.
Found at : Kitkiöjärvi, Pajala, Sweden, Muonionalusta
Site : Naturhistoriska Riksmuseet, Sweden, Stockholm, Frescati
Comment : This meteorite is found in Sweden, one of the biggest with its mass (weight) of 300 kg.

Dinosaur foot print, Sweden

Meteorites, Naturhistoriska Riksmuseet 2019
Type : Dinosaur foot print
Age : 150'000'000 years ? old
Found at : Southwestern coast of Sweden
Site : Naturhistoriska Riksmuseet, Sweden, Stockholm, Frescati
Comment : Everybody maybe know of the extinction of the dinosaurs by a big meteorite, this foot print was before that accident. I think the geology man told me that it was 150 million years old. But what was surprised me a lot was: it was found in Sweden ! I didn't know we had that exiting history in our country.

It was a lot of other interesting things we found this day at the museum, but this was what I found related to astronomy.
