Day 6, Roma, Visby, Galgberget, Krusmyntagården, Ferry terminal:Map over the sixth day travel. This day we investigated the city wall of Visby from outside. Visby:Now is only one day left. Gunilla has something to do in Visby and we took a walk there. In this old house an ancestor to Gunilla took curses in shoe making, it was in the 19th century. Defence wall of Visby:After that we wanted to examine the City Wall from outside. We started at the Southern Tower. You can follow this excellent information about the towers of Visby's city wall:
The length of the wall is about 3.5 km, to not have too many photos of it it's photographed in panorama views. The eastern Wall from South to North. The city wall has been rebuilt many times. From a low wall to be increased to higher levels by the years. Part of it has fallen down and other parts are incorporated into other buildings. To the right is the tar cookery protruding out of the wall, we looked at it from the inside yesterday. It was very hot this day and no shadows along the wall to walk into. At the Mill tower is one of the bigger openings, maybe done in later years to have the cars to pass through. |
Eastern Gate, I and my mother walk through this gate many times when we visited Visby 1970. A big part of the wall is missing North of the Eastern gate. To the left, recently repair of the wall, you recognize that part because it's brighter. To the right some older reinforcement with iron bars. At the time when they reinforced the wall with these iron bars not all people liked it iron bars, they don't belong to the same era as the wall. Nowadays I don't think any people have any objection about it. Not many people walking this walkway this hot day, good for me. Because then it's easier for me to get a free view to the wall. Dalman's gate to the left. The wall is very wavy, but it has to do how the smartphone make panoramic photos. The Northern part of the wall looks to have bigger towers, or is it because the other has felt down over the years ? How much stones must have been used to build this long wall, but they have a lot of stones. |

Now we have come to the end of the Eastern wall and it change directions to the sea. Northern gate, we stopped here, the Northern wall is in shadow and we are out of energy. Walk through the gate into the city once again. Oh no, one more church ruin, we can't take more of them ! Now we follow the Western part of the wall, the one against the sea. In a rapid pace we hope to reach the Southern wall soon. Small nice houses appear at the Southern end. Just a few hundred meter left until we reach the last tower. You see the tower behind the buildings. The last tower, it's the Gunpowder tower, built already 1160. |
Outside the city wall we took a rest and sit down at a bench, looking at the ships that comes and go. Still there are many hours until the ferry depart, not until 1:30 am. Galgberget:We bought some food and brought it to the hill near the gallows hill. Stayed here a couple of hours, enjoyed the great panoramic view. We met a couple from South Africa and they told us they are on a cruise at Baltic Sea. I think that was the first time we met someone from that country. Still some hours until the ferry depart, what to do, it got too boring to stay here. Krusmyntagården:I remember another nice place from another visit at Gotland, Krusmyntagården, it's only ten minutes away from Visby by car. We wanted something to eat but they closed the kitchen when we arrived. But the bar was open and we could order more to drinks alchol free of course for the driver. Even if it's evening now it's hot, just sitting and relaxing. After an hour we had collected energy enough to take a walk around the place. Looking at the flowers. Maybe this is the famous Visby roses. Down to the beach. Smooth round stones on the beach, nice to walk on. |
Gunilla step out in the water to cool down her feet. More information about Krusmyntagården:
Visby:Now we must go towards the ferry, a short stop in Visby first. Down to the harbor, here is loud music, very loud. Gunilla's favorite place. Onboard the Ferry:A couple of hours later and we have entered the ferry and are back to Nynäshamn where we started from six days ago. The END
