My travels in Sweden:

I believe most of you have seen the TV-series The Onedin line, it's about the family Onedin and their old sailing ships. I like these old wooden sailing ships and also steam ships. My girlfriend gave me a birthday gift, a cruise with the schooner Vega. Direct we can see what a lot of work that has been done on this ship to have it in top condition. It has a rescue boat too, it feels safe. 
The ship is built at Viken in Skåne, it has three masts. On a sign we get some data about the ship:
On all sailing ships, lots of ropes are needed to control the sails. 
Waxholmsbolaget's old office. 
Somewhere I have read that one square meter of sail compare to 1 kW or 1.5 hp during an optimal case. To fit enough area of sails on a boat you need very high masts and many of them, this ship has three. |

After about 20 minutes the crew prepare for the departure. 
The captain take the steering wheel. 
The captain plan todays cruise, weather looks fine but not very much wind. 
Skeppsholmen:
At the island Skeppsholmen you can find a lot of old ships anchored. In the background, Moderna Museet (the Modern Museum). 
Masthamnen:

To get some speed more sails needed, hard work for the crew. Blockhusudden:
Skylights. 
Gunilla needs coffee. 
Instructions how to repair the ship in case of emergency.

All guest could do exercise how to set the sails. 
The sun disappear and we expect it could be rain soon. 
Lidingö:
A tug passing by, it towing a ship, do we need it too? No, in case of no wind there is a Diesel engine on Vega. 
A lot of old boats are out on sea today, this is the steam ship Storskär, belonging to Waxholmsbolaget. |
Nacka Strand:
We will not set any speed record this day, the wind is still weak. 
The captain has left over the steering wheel to the crew. 
The engine controls and the compass, no digital instrumentation here!

Lidingö:
Now the rain has started and the wind is very weak. The captain started the engine to take us home.

It's complicated with all these ropes that control the sails, each has it own purpose. 
You have seen all those old pirate movies, they use these to knock the enemy down. |
Included was a typical sea farers soup lunch.

Another old steamer, Frithiof. 
Steamer Stockholm, I think I have read that in the beginning of 20th century we had more then hundred steamships crossing the lakes and sea in Stockholm. Nybrokajen:
