Five days by walk, bus and tram in Lisbon, 2018 |
Day II, Lisbon and Castelo de S. Jorge, Convento do Carmo, Mercado da Ribeira, Praca do Comercio:Google Map over our walk and tram trip today: |
Drying books:After yesterdays heavy rain we have to dry our tourist guide with the hair dryer. Miradouro de Santa Luzia:At our stay we had a terrace, with todays weather without rain we could visit it. There is a fog over the whole bay, a beautiful view. Across the street we have a view point, the Miradouro de Santa Luzia. On the second floor we have our rooms. Stairs down to the alleys that lead to the harbor. The harbor is hidden in the fog.
Now we start our walk up the hill to Castelo de S. Jorge. |

Now our legs tell us that we must sit down and have something to eat. We leave the Castelo and walk down the hill. Martim Moniz:Our next place to visit is the metro station Martim Moniz. We have got the information that we can buy 24 hours tickets only at the Metro stations. You buy the tickets at a machine in the entrance hall, it's not so easy to understand, a guard helped us the first time. The tickets are for the local buses and trams and cost 3.30 + 0.50 Euro. If you want to travel farther away their are other options. In the beginning we had problem to understand the tram and buses (which they call them Carris) where they go. At each station it was a map, but no where to found it. At last we found a homepage where it was possible to download a PDF file with the map. Lisbon bus and tram line map to download, PDF file: If you plan to stay in Lisbon, print out this map, it will make your stay much easier! Praca D. Pedro IV:After we had got our tram and bus tickets we took a walk to the square Praca D. Pedro IV or Rossio Square. Behind is the National Theatre.
From here we see the elevator Elevador de Santa Justa. Our friend Gunnar who travel with us tell us that elevator is very famous. Our next place to visit.

Elvador de Santa Justa:This elevator looks very similar to our own elevator in Stockholm. It was very popular, we stood there and waiting for a long time until we gave up. The ticket cost 5 Euro. More to read about Santa Justa Lift at Wikipedia:

Earlier from the Castelo we saw a ruin of a church, just behind the corner from where we are now. That could be interesting to see.
The square Chafariz do Carmo where we find a caffee. Convento do Carmo:We could read that the Convent was destroyed in the big earthquake 1755. This earthquake we can read everywhere about. More to read about Carmo Convent (Lisbon) at Wikipedia:
We found that we could reach the elevator from here at the upper level. From this elevator plat form we had a view over the town and the ocean. They install the sewers in a practical way, very easy to repair. Mercado da Ribeira:Time for a dinner, we have read about the old market Mercado da Ribeira that shall have a lot of nice restaurants. |
We was not disappointed, very nice place and a lot of foods to chose from.
Now we were tired and start moving home to our room. More to read about Mercado da Ribeira at Wikipedia (in Portuguese):
With tram no 25E we came to square Praca do Comercio. These old trams from General Electric was built 1904, 114 years old today and still runs and they have a lot of them. In Stockholm we once had these trams also, but they where scraped long time ago. Praca do Comercio:In background the Royal Ribeira palace which the square has got its name from. In ancient Roman times this place was below the water level, it was a bay where the river flows out in the ocean. More to read about Praca do Comercio at Wikipedia:
With tram no 28E we come back to our stay. Our door to the room has a heavy lock, like a bank vault. We were warned several times by the locals for pickpockets and high crime, maybe not for no reason they have such doors.
