Day V: Boat tour to Spinalonga:We had earlier read about an island with name Spinalonga. It looks very interesting for us to see. But a boat tour demand us to have a day with very fine weather, no rain. Already four days earlier we decided that Friday was the day to go for a boat tour and bought the tickets, we had looked at the weather forecast. Now when we wake up on Friday morning it was heavy rain, what! But after we had eaten the breakfast it's look better. Included in the tour was also bus transfer with pickup at our hotel, a Barbeque on the island Kalydon, a visit to Spinalonga but have to buy museum tickets separate on the island, on the bus on the way home we stopped at the coast village Agios Nikolaos. Included was an English guide. All this for just 22 Euro each plus the museum ticket for 4 Euro. Google Map over Crete, travel to Spinalonga: |
Elounda harbor:The bus picked us up at the hotel and took us to Elounda harbor where the boat was waiting for us. We could see that they have had rain here too. The island we see in the background is the Kalydon. That's where we shall have a barbeque dinner later. At Wikipedia there is more to read about Elounda:
At sea:Oh... the clouds break up, promising for a nice day at sea. Passing by the Spinalonga island which we shall visit later, looks already exiting. Kalydon:We have just anchored at the island Kalydon here. Up the hill we see a small chapel that we want to see and we started walking up the hill. Strange landscape, not much soil and till some flowers. Doesn't it look similar to something we have in Sweden? Little bit color less but still. In the rocky landscape we found this, a water reservoir maybe. There are also other small island around Kalydon. The Greek people don't want their tourist to get lost here, just follow the painted stones. |

Still a bit left to the chapel. To our surprise we found parked cars up here, first we thought that it must be a ferry from Crete to Kalydon. But later a couple from Germany told us that it was a small bridge connecting the island to Crete.
A look back from where we come, Elounda. Time to get back to the boat and the barbeque. We tried a shortcut through the bush but have to turn around, too sticky.

The fish was not included in the barbeque. At sea:After the dinner the boat take us to the next stop, the island of Spinalonga.
A last farewell to island of Kalydon. Spinalonga:An impressive old fortress at the eastern side of Spinalonga. The small harbor where the boats anchor.
After we had bought our tickets we walk up to the fortress.

These tombs are for those people who died from leprosy.
A narrow patch lead us up to the main fortress.
Very narrow stairways lead us up to the fort defense wall.
|
Could these buildings be what's left of the houses where the leprosy people lived in. All people that got leprosy forced to move to this island. The last man died in the 1950s.
The people who lived here had hospital, houses, school. The old hospital? A look at the clock and we realized the we have to speed up if we don't want to stay on this island forever.
After a fast walk we see our boat again, the harbor is so small that the boat have to anchor out at the sea and wait there until we come back. |

A tunnel through the house lead us down to the harbor. Back on the boat. Elounda harbor:Back to Elounda harbor from where we started our boat trip. Now the weather is much better and the sun bathing people has come out to the beach. Agios Nikolaos:Before we the bus take us back to Hersonissos we do a stop at the coast village Agios Nikolaos. A walk across the city and we come to the lake Voulismeni. We was told that this city was the most expensive of all places at Crete. A short break for coffee and a cola and we have to go back to our bus. Wikipedia has more information about the coast village Agios Nikolaos:
Hersonissos:The afternoon and evening is windy, we could not sit down at the beach this evening and have dinner, but above is fine. |
A cheese and meat plate, wine and a Raki to finish this wonderful day with. The Moon rise above the ocean and gave us a spectacular view.
