Planning our Crete trip:First we plan everything about culture we want to see, especially the ancient Crete, Knossos, old center of the towns etc. But then we also plan for something connected to astronomy. The astronomy part you can read about later on another page. Google Map over Crete: |
Day I: Hersonissos:Arlanda Sweden:We left home about 3 pm. This time we chose a charter flight, the Apollo. Normally we buy the flight separate from the hotel, but this time we find it very attractive. Our aircraft are waiting for us. After 4 hours flight we closing in to Crete and we landed about 1 am in the early morning. We also this time had booked a bus transfer because of the late arrival. The airport was close to Heraklion in northern Crete and our hotel was nearby Eastern of Hersonissos, a small village close to the beach. It's a bit confusing about the names of cities down here, another name is Chersonisou and then you have the Greek name also. At Wikipedia you find more information about Crete:
Thalia hotel:When arriving to the hotel Thalia where we stay we got some information and our key to the room. Took the elevator up to floor one where our room lay with a street view. The clock was almost 3 am until we got to bed. After we had eaten the breakfast we took a walk around in the hotel. From the upper part we see this view over the ocean. In the opposite direction south we have a view over the mountain. Up there are three lovely small villages that we visited the following days. Now we were hungry, we take the stairs down to the breakfast room. Here is the breakfast room, the breakfast was a buffet where we could get everything we wished for. Hersonissos:First walk outside the hotel, down to the beach. At Wikipedia you find more information about Hersonissos:

Map over Hersonissos: We lived just southeastern of the Aquaworld Aquarium close to the beach at the map. This first day we had about 28 Celsius degrees. The same temperature we had this hot summer in Sweden. Too much, 20 to 25 Celsius degrees is more our preferred temperature!
All the way along the beaches there are restaurants, the view from them are fantastic. This first day was the only when we see a lot of people bathing. Maybe they felt the following days lower temperature was too low. This old wooden boat look fantastic, what a project to do a renovation of a boat like that. It looks to have been manufactured in the 1960s. Anybody who knows which model it is, Italian, American? The pirate ship Black Rose, there are always these popular pirate ships at tourist places. Here at the pier we turned around and walked back. |
An old Greek fishing boat, we where not sure if they still used it or if it was only here to have something nice to look at from the old days. Lazy cat.
The restaurants and the hotels are built almost all the way down to the beach.
The Beach Buggy and the quad look exiting. When we asked about the price to rent a Beach Buggy we got the answer, they where almost three times as expensive as an ordinary car to rent. Later we rent a Jeep instead. Our hotel's pool, we never saw many people here, all people were at the beaches or the restaurants. Nice decoration in the fountain, maybe salvaged from a shipwreck. |
The Eastern part of the beach. This is one of the roads that lead up to the mountain with the three old small villages. We didn't walk all the way up this first evening. More about them later. Back to the hotel and our balcony, it could be a bit noisy sometimes, but we got used to it. The second walk, these time at the evening when all the neon lights up.
Ice cream shop. This restaurant had the tables placed almost out in the ocean, terrific, here we got our first dinner. A cheese plate with meat to share. |
Can you hear the waves rolling in? This evening there was a full Moon to look at.
