Day 6, Speyer:Now we are on the 6th day on our travel and it's time for us to turnaround, our flight home are only 2 days away. We decided to visit the little town Speyer today. It's an old town and it's on the other side of the river Rheine, the Western side. |
Overview of Speyer city center:Many of Germany's cities was destroyed during the WW II but this small town looks to have been spared. |
Mannheim:Out from the hotel after the breakfast and walking towards the train station. On the way we pass through the fort we walked by when we came 2 days ago. Now we found a sign that tell us the name of it: Reste der Bastion St. Andreas. It's only 600 meter to the station from the hotel. As when we arrived here, a lot of people. We bought two separate train tickets from the ticket machine, still don't know how to buy two tickets at the same time. To come to Speyer we take the train to Germersheim. Four minutes to wait for the train. Here it come in time, not many people here waiting for this train. After a couple of stations the train got stuck on a station, we sat there and waiting, one after one of the other passenger leave the train. A German women talked to us and asking for help in German, but we didn't understand. After a while we was alone in the train, something must be wrong, Gunilla found one in the train staff and asked. He said it's something wrong with the train and we have to cross the plattform to take another train. Just after we jumped on the next train it started, that was in the last seconds. Speyer:It didn't take much more than 30 minutes to Speyer. This is the main station and it's a ten minutes walk to old center. Clouds but no rain, it's about 14 degrees Celsius now in the morning. First building we see in opposite of the station is this beautiful building, Peseidon. A Greek restaurant or ? Stadtbibliothek Speyer:The city library is also a very nice looking building. So far we like this for us unknown city. A channel or a small river follow the street Bahnhofstrasse we walking a long, it's dry now. |

The old city of Speyer:Now we are in front of the gate to the old town, the gate Altpörtel. It has two clocks, one for hours and another for minutes. From the beginning it was a part of the city wall and it was built about 1230.
Postgallerie, a shopping center. Now we go to the restaurant where the reception to the hotel is, leave our luggage there to come back later and pick them up. Fountain St. Georgbrunnen:Walking into the center of old town through Maximillianstrasse and come to this square. The well St. Georgbrunnen on the left, it's relative modern, built 1930. The tourist center is open and we walked in there to ask some questions. It's Monday today and we asked about the historical museum, got the answer that it's closed, that's normal on Mondays. Looking into the museum Judenhof which was open today. But there were nothing interesting for us, walking further. What is this: Bischöfliches Ordinariaq, is it a children school or ? Speyer Cathedral:At the end of the Maximillian street and town is the Speyer Cathedral.
Historisches Museum der Pfalz:In the same block as the church is the historical museum. We look around to see if there is anything on the outside to look at. But couldn't find anything. We have read that Speyer was founded by Romans about 50 a.d. that had been interesting to know something about. |
What to do ? There is a big technical museum in Speyer too, do you see the Jumbo jet sticking up over the trees ? Technik Museum Speyer:We walked over a big parking lot to come to this museum, we know it's open today. At the yard we found this big turbine, belonged to a nuclear power plant once. The nuclear power plant Philippsburg Block 2, 1400 MW, from the 1970s. Something older, a steam engine. We now realize that this is a very big museum, to get something out of it we need at last five hours, something we don't have.
We walk back to old city, now it soon looks to come rain and we took a short cut through a park to the Cathedral on the hill. A knight get his eyes on us, he belongs to the king Heinrich guard. Back to the Cathedral, it's really big. Now at last we found some traces of the Romans, they who founded this town almost 2000 years ago. |
There is a garden around the Cathedral with flowers to look at, this is the same flowers as we saw in Heidelberg, was it Blue Rain ? We take a sneak inside the Cathedral to see what's there. Very calm and I almost fall asleep at the bench. One o'clock and it's two hours left until we can get our room, going back to from where we came earlier today. St. Joseph church:Now we go in the opposite direction from the city gate. We found the church St. Joseph at the street Gilgenstrasse. Vestiges Romains:Opposite to the church there is an exhibition with Romans things they have found. The museum is of course closed. Almost three o'clock and it's time for us to pickup our luggage and get access to our room. Back to the restaurant and the reception. The room is on another street, Karmelitstrasse. This little nice house is where we are going to stay tonight, up in the sky on roof level. |

A big soft double bed and a roof window. At the other end the little roof window we saw from the street below. Now we want to investigate the blocks North of the old town. We found an outlet and I got new T-shirts, earlier I found new ear plugs for the smart phone. Fully equipped now. When we walk around we look for some nice restaurant where we can eat dinner. Lot of restaurants, but still we find the restaurant where we live is more attracting. Ordered two meal, one Flammkuchen, very tasty. And one more, looks like a hamburger but had some other name. Very tasty that one too. Now we plan for the last day and where to go. |
