My travels in Sweden:
A walk along Motala Ström in Norrköping, 2019

One place I always have found beautiful in books is Norrköping and its river Motala Ström. We have traveled through Norrköping by car many times but never stopped at the old town center. Today my girlfriend had to visit the archive of Norrköping in her research and I followed to take a walk in the old city of Norrköping and take some photos.

I have added links with deeper information, most of them are Wikipedia links. I have chosen the Swedish link, but in some cases you can shift to English. If there is no English version you can use Google translator or similar service. There are more information in the Swedish language.

A walk along Motala Ström in Norrköping, 2019:

Overview of old town of Norrköping:

Zoom in and find the streets menioned in the text below.

Tyska Torget:

I started my walk at the Tyska Torget (German Square). This is the Hedvig's Church we see, it's many times called the German Church.

On the Southern side of the square we have Norrköping's Town Hall.

Crossing the street Hamngatan and then we are at the river. The Eastern direction of Motala Ström. In the background we could see old buildings from the industrial era.

The bridge Saltängsbron. The trams run over the river on this bridge.

I follow the street Hamngatan in Western direction along the river.

At this place the street changes name from Hamngatan to Gamla Rådstugatan. Along this river there has been a lot of industries. Now the buildings are demolished at some places and at other restored and rebuilt to residential blocks which we can see on later photos.

The Swedish company Holmen's office.

Lars J. tells:
There was the nightclub Palace at this place earlier. There were also discos with the names The Grape, The Queens Corner and The Paradise where we sometimes hung out. The Paradise nightclub was first owned by Lennart Polhammar (called MonoPolhammar, he also owned restaurant "Peters" in Norrköping, too). Many known bands have appeared there. New owners and later bankruptcy 2010 (after 45 years) due to reduced disco interest and competition from all new pubs in town.

Strömparken:

This is the park Strömparken.

In the park there is a salmon ladder. I couldn't see any salmon or other fish but the seagull maybe see something to catch.

Gamla bryggeriet:

Many old buildings were built at the shore of to the river, they needed the water supply.

My travels in Sweden: A walk along Motala Ström in Norrköping, 2019

The building to the right is the reason why my girlfriend visits Norrköping today. It was once a brewery, Norrköpings Förenade Bryggerier and at that place Gunilla's grandfather's brother worked. His name was Oscar Björkander, died 1929, maybe someone who is reading this knows something about him?

Most breweries I have seen in Sweden is built like this building, with bricks and arc shaped windows. They are now rebuilding them to be used as residential blocks.

Not bad flats with balconies hanging out over the river.

I follow the walk path to the other side of the bridge Järnbron (Iron bridge).

The yellow building to the right looks like a typically old hydro power plant.

My travels in Sweden: A walk along Motala Ström in Norrköping, 2019

There are more than one of these old hydro power plants. I don't think any of them are in use today. This could be the hydro power plant Drags kraftstation.

The building Knäppingsborg at the street Järnbrogatan.

When I was walking at the street Dalsgatan I saw these construction workers, they are restoring the overflow canal.

The Cotton weaving factory:

My travels in Sweden: A walk along Motala Ström in Norrköping, 2019

The big industry in old days was the weaving industries. It lasted for 350 years and made the city rich. It ended about 1950. This weaver is built 1750.

In 1947 they were optimistic about the future of the textile fabrics. See this movie how they support the youths education for the textile fabrics:

Kvarngatan:

My travels in Sweden: A walk along Motala Ström in Norrköping, 2019

I follow the street Kvarnsgatan and found this old wooden house. The block is Stampen and I can read that the yellow old building to the right is built on top of the basement of the even older building Dalskvarnen.

My travels in Sweden: A walk along Motala Ström in Norrköping, 2019

Is this a weaving factory too or is it a power plant?

Lars J. tells:
The building with the high chimneys is extra nice in December. Then they place large Christmas lights on the four chimneys (of which two are seen here). They light up one every Sunday starting with 1st of Advent.

Now my plan was to take a photography on the famous textile factory which is located in the middle of the stream. But look ... it's covered with scaffolding and plastic.

We are now on the backside of the brewery, the block Kroken.
