Corralejo, Las Salinas del CarmenDay 3:Today we go as much North that is possibly, to Corralejo. We have to take two different busses to come to that place. Puerto del Rosario:First stop is in Puerto del Rosario, it was the bus no 3 and it cost 1.45 Euro. You buy the tickets in cash on the bus. When looking out over the city we felt this is not a place for us, too big. After 30 minutes of waiting we took the next bus to Corralejo, bus no 6 and the ticket cost 3.4 Euro. Here is a map of todays route: On the way at North we passed through a big sand dune area that looks very exciting. Corralejo:Here we have just arrived to Corralejo, thirsty after the bus travel we sat down at a cafe for something to drink. After that we started walking along the main street, here are a lot of stores where you can buy everything you need (and not need). At the end of the main street we turn around the corner and enter an alley that lead us down to the harbor and the beach. The island out there is Isla de Lobos and behind is Lanzarote that we visited two years ago. Here is more information about Lobos Islands:
We walked back and forth the marina and looking for the best restaurant where we can get something to eat. Today we have great weather and want to sit near the ocean. Tapas and sangria was our choise. Now it's time to walk back to the bus, after a while we hear some music in the background. We found that it came from the beach, a band is playing and we sat down and listening to them. Corralejo was a very nice place, a place we can visit one more time in the future. Day 4:Caleta de Fuste:Today the weather isn't perfect. We start the day with a visit to a nearby shopping center. I looked for new shoes but didn't find any appealing enough. After the shopping center we walk back along the beach. We investigate a fortress, this fortress looks to have been built during the WW2. The tide is low now, the width of the beach has increased several meters. Yesterday when we were here there was just a tiny meter of sand between the wall and the ocean. A floating marina, they have sea lions here and you can if you want swim together with them. Our beach in background. The weather went better during the day and we decided to visit a salt museum. Here are we waiting at the bus station, bus after bus pass by, every time we asked if it will take us to Las Salinas del Carmen where the museum is they said, take next bus. We had to wait an hour until we got away. Las Salinas del Carmen:At our destination, it took about less than ten minutes for the bus to take us here, we could have walked ! |
We bought two tickets, 6 Euro each. The museum is divided in two parts, one outside and one inside the building. We started with the outside museum because we had a fine weather for the moment. There are information signs around the area. They explain that they fill the first basins with seawater, it's done from the tide or waves. No energy is needed. When water has evaporated enough they transfer the concentrated water of salt to the next basin. It's the sun's heat that make the water to evaporate, no external energy is needed here either. We walk further, here is a whale skeleton, we have seen a lot of them around the island, this one is big, must be more than 15 meters long. The last basins, when concentrated enough the water is transferred to these small basins. the last ones. The salt will collect on the surface as a crust that will be picked up. The magazine where they store the salt. Once a time salt was very valuable. They exported the salt and ships anchored here to transported it out to other countries. We are now finished with the outdoor part and going back to the museum building. |
Pass by another fortress, we have seen many of them now. After we had walked around in the museum which was very interesting we want to go home, but it rained heavily. Waiting inside until it stops. Should we wait for the bus to take us home ? No, we decided to walk, just 3.5 km. Here is more information about the salt museum at Fuerteventura:
Keep on walking, there are dark grey clouds but we didn't get any rain. Our walk back to the hotel: Caleta de Fuste:After having a rest at the hotel we took an evening walk out to down town again. Irish coffee, Gunilla's favorite !
