Gdansk:Gdansk is a coast city of Poland. It's very easy for us who live in Stockholm to get here. Just south of Stockholm we have the ferry terminal in Nynäshamn. Ferries go from here to Gdansk, it's a long way to go for the ferry and you normally sleep onboard. We looked for a hotel in the old city, but all of them was very expensive. We found others just outside the town, but then we must take the tram every time we go to the city. After a while we find a flat we could rent one block from the restaurant street of Gdansk, perfect ! We didn't know much about Gdansk, but one thing we had found, there is a big crane at the river all tourist want to see, we also.

There it is, the big brown tower leaning over the river. The Gdansk is a very old town, these old statues they have found during excavations. We were a bit hungry already, we found a nice restaurant at the dock with fish as specaility. On the other side of the river is a sea museum, the ship in front is part of that.

We make a visit inside the medieval crane. It's not so easy to found information in English, most of it is in Polish and German. Maybe better today. It was very interesting to see, big wheel where people walk to act as motors to the crane. They have done a lot of to restore the old buildings of the Gdansk, but still there are much left to restore. We saw photographs how it looked after the WW II, every bombed to ruins.
Here we have found a defense tower, maybe a part of the defense wall once. On this travel we brought our friend Jan, he is concentrated here to get a decent photo of the tower. |
We have read that there is tower that is open with a view over all the city.
We could read that there is a lot of stairs to climb up to the tower. Jan who is with us has problem with his knee, shall he stay on the ground, or? Nope, he follow us all the way up. One of the big bells. Impressive building, as you see part of it is built in modern concrete. It was bombed to ruin and has been restored, maybe during the 1950s. |
Step 400. It was worth it, from here we can see from above the city. The church is built 1343.
|
Gate to the even older part.
This is just one block from where we stayed. We had so many restaurants to chose from.
|
Kantor pod basztami.
Now we are onboard the ship that belongs to the museum. One of the days we took an old ship and cruised on the river. The river is Motlawa. More to read about Motlawa river at Wikipedia:

Walking in the nearby blocks of Gdansk old city. |
European Solidarity Centre. We had read about this museum and want to visit it. It's placed North of Gdansk old city. But when we came here we found that it hadn't opened yet. It opened a couple of months later. More to read about European Solidarity Centre at Wikipedia:
