Helmut's restoration project:
C. G. Pettersson designed mahogany cruiser with a modern touch

  1. Introduction, a C. G. Pettersson cruiser from Sweden
  2. Transport from Sweden to Switzerland and a first look inside

5, Diesel electric power systems:

The old engine:

Old boats often had there engine replaced several times. According to the information Helmut had found in the Swedish records it was a 16 hp Tellus engine from the beginning. That engine was probably replaced long time ago and maybe even more engines had powered the Sinbad before Helmut bought it.

Helmut tells:
As already mentioned, the engine was old. This engine could never have been homologated in Switzerland. Therefore it was removed first.

New Diesel electric system:

The shape of the hull doesn't need very much power from the engine. With separate engine and driving system there is more freedom to where placing the engine.

Helmut tells:
The diesel generator makes 11 kW DC. The generator consumes about 3 to 4 liters of diesel per hour.

In a boat you don't have to think about the weight very much as when make cars electric. The new affordable battery system with Lithium batteries make difference.

More to read about Lithium Iron Phosphate battery at Wikipedia:

Helmut's C. G. Pettersson cruiser Sindbad

Helmut tells:
Until two years ago I used normal lead sulfate car batteries (8 pieces of four each in series and these then parallel = 48 V and approx. 230 Amph). But they didn't work out so well. For two years now I have lithium Iron phosphate batteries SB12 V160E-ZC (4 pieces of 160 Ah in series). This means less weight and more power, because deep discharges are no longer a problem.

Note by Lars:
48 Volt x 160 Amph = 7.6 kWh.

I remember my father looked at a similar solution, but then a Diesel hydraulic system with the 1960s technology. Notice, there is no need of a rudder that cause extra frictions.

Helmut tells:
The electric motor is a 48 Volt DC motor and has 10 kW at the propeller.

Some data:

  • Max speed 8 knot at 1000 rpm
  • At 1000 rpm the batteries last for 1/2 hour
  • At 500 rpm the batteries last for 4 hours
  • At 250 rpm the batteries last for 12 hours

At full speed it is better to switch on the diesel generator. I still have a shore connection and therefore I do not need more than about 50 liters of diesel per season.
