5, Diesel electric power systems:The old engine:Old boats often had there engine replaced several times. According to the information Helmut had found in the Swedish records it was a 16 hp Tellus engine from the beginning. That engine was probably replaced long time ago and maybe even more engines had powered the Sinbad before Helmut bought it.
Helmut tells: New Diesel electric system:The shape of the hull doesn't need very much power from the engine. With separate engine and driving system there is more freedom to where placing the engine.

Note by Lars: I remember my father looked at a similar solution, but then a Diesel hydraulic system with the 1960s technology. Notice, there is no need of a rudder that cause extra frictions.

At full speed it is better to switch on the diesel generator. I still have a shore connection and therefore I do not need more than about 50 liters of diesel per season. All photographs taken here on the boat Sindbad are owned by Helmut, they are used here with his permission.
