Day 5, Zadar, visit the Sfinx: |
Today the plan is to visit a Sfinx that we have read about, it's on the other side of the bay. Zadar:Out through the gate and to the harbor. Walking over the bridge to the other side of the bay. Today we turn right along the harbor we see here. A lot of small private boats to look at, even today it's hot, about 25 degree C. A view over the bay and to the Bell Tower, close to where we stay the first three days. There are not only pleasure boats, here is a fishing boat. Along the walk we found this building, it looks like an abandoned ferry terminal. It must be a lot of work to restore this building today, maybe they could have cafes and restaurants here. Old nice looking luxurious villas, one for me please. |

At the pier here are all the multi expensive yachts, stored for better times. On the outermost part of the pier is a small ferry line. Very small, he rowing his boat back and forth whole the day. Maraska, an old factory, I think they produced a famous liqueur here. It's only the shell left of the building today. Maybe they will built a hotel of it in the future. Along this street we got to see many good old looking villas. All of them with sea view. The bay where the Sfinx should be. Yes, there it is. Strange to find a Sfinx here in Zadar. We read at the information sign and got to know this: This park belongs to the artist Giovanni Smirich. The villa above was built in 1901 for his family. |
In the park we also found a bench, sit here and get a view over the sea. The villa, sad to see someone has scribbled on the building. More information about Giovanni Smirich:
Our friend Julia walked much longer than this, all the way to the beach she told us earlier. But we see modern there are buildings along the walk and it's a long way to walk. We skipped that and sat down at a cafe. No it's not coffee, it's ice cream for me, chocolate ice cream. The old style yachts looks so great. Back in old town of Zadar. Now we have found that there is a street on top of the defense wall. Something we must investigate. First we followed it in Southern direction. Found this building at the end, it looked abandoned. Another building with a tower. At this Southern part of the old town we have earlier days seen a cafe that looks very cozy. Now we visit it and planning the rest of the day. |

We decided once again walk on the street on top of the defense wall but now in the other direction. Up from here we have a view over the bridge we used to come to the Sfinx. At the same time we looking for the ferry we will take tomorrow when we go to Pula, the next city. It's already the fifth day and we have to speed up. We booked two tickets for the ferry, 160 Kuna each, it's about 50 Euro together. At the Northern end of the defense wall there has been a fortification with a moat. We now try to find some traces of it. This is a restaurant with the name Kastel so we are close. Yes here it is, markers in the street where its walls have stood. It was built at the end of 16th century. What more to do this day ? Of course even today it's a sun set. Just around the corner from where we are. Even this evening it has came a lot of people to watch it. It's cloud this evening, but that only get it even more spectacular. Now only the evening dinner is left, we walk back, through the Roman forum and into the narrow alleys where we earlier found all these cozy restaurants. Yes, exactly what we need. Amal has sent us a message that she will come over to Zadar tomorrow, we answered that we must leave before 4 pm when our ferry departs. |
