Day 3, Zadar, Bell tower: |
Zadar in the morning:Our apartment is big and we have a kitchen. Here we take our breakfast and enjoy the life. Archaeological museum of Zadar:Our plan for today is to visit the archaeological museum. It's on the other side of the street from where we living. These kind of metal work can be found in Sweden too. In Sweden they are from the bronze age, about 3000 years ago. Sweden is very far away from here but no doubt that they had some contact. Wine barrels they have found at the harbor and out in the sea. Wine was a very important part in the life and valuable. More information about Zadar:
Bell Tower:Direct after we came out from the museum we met Amal who had took the bus to visit Zadar. We sat at the cafe at the forum and talked. We told her that we have plans to go up in the Bell Tower, it's here at the cafe. She found it exiting and follow us up in the tower. Here we are at the first floor. More stairs to climb up in a narrow staircase. The original tower was built during the 15th century, the tower we see today is built on top of the old tower during the 1890s. When up at the top we get a breath taking view over the old town, this is the Northern direction. In the center is this top tower placed, high and thin. The tower has a total height of 56 meter. View in the Southern direction, the main street that we already has walking along so many times. |

The Roman forum square and the Eastern view. All metal parts are gone, once it said: MIOHELE OILLHBER ... , Latin or ? The bay and mainland, here is the modern Zadar. Northern direction. The big island to the left is Ugijan, many tourist go over there. Saint Donatus church. Don't go up in this tower when it's time for the bells to ring, it's loud, it's the Bell Tower ! After the Bell Tower down to the harbor. Looking at the big fishes, it looks like they eat something from the water surface, flies, or ? We are at the bay, a walk bridge cross it. |
We walk over the bridge to the other side to examine what's there. Turned right to the inner bay and back to the old town. The inlet to the bay at the Northern side. We walked clock wise around the bay and came out here, the Southern defense wall from the outside. Once it was a water-filled moat here, part of the defense system. An opening in the defense wall and the street is Ravnice. The gate from inside. Close to the gate is this well with a slanted surroundings. A palm tree, exotic for Swedish people. Back to the Landward Gate, we want to examine it closer from outside. |

The lower part could be from Roman but the upper is from middle age maybe. The Venice symbol, lion with its wings, Sweden also have lions in its signature but without the wings. Back to the defense wall and see if we can find something interesting. A weapon opening, for rifles or archers ? Another opening down to the basement. This could be a entrance door, a small one. Now it's one meter above the ground. Another gate, it's closed, maybe a building behind. To the right, the Five Wells Square. At the square is this opening, it clearly looks like Roman style. |
Time for dinner, we walk down to one of the more narrower alleys. Some buildings need some care. It wasn't time to take a photo of the delicious dinner until it was gone. Back to Roman forum, the Moon hovering above us and the Sun set. This was the third day here and we love it. Now we have one problem, it's Wednesday and the ferry to Pula doesn't depart until Friday. We must get another room for two nights. |
