You can use the maps from Stockholmskällan. It has the function that you can compare maps from different years. It's only one map that cover the areas outside Stockholm City, the map from 1934. |
After we had finished our walks at Södermalm we continue with the center of Stockholm, the Gamla Stan or Old Town. I have added links with deeper information, most of them are Wikipedia links. I have chosen the Swedish link, but in some cases you can shift to English. If there is no English version you can use Google translator or similar service. Skeppsbron:Behind the fence where the ships are anchored is Stadsgården, that was our harbor earlier walk. One of the Custom house that is still here, in earlier days they were many. The street is closed where it reach Slussen, the street is Skeppsbron. When I was young there were a lot of cranes and ships at this harbor. The ferry terminal for the boats that goes to Djurgården.

You can still find traces of the old harbor, here are the railways. People like to sit here and look at the boats that's passing by. The big cruiser are leaving the harbor, maybe the destination is Finland.

There are a lot of boats you can take for a day off at sea.

In the canal there is a port, they can raise this device and block the water from flowing out from the lake Mälaren to the Salt sea. Block Cephalus, this building belongs to the government today. Munkbro torget:In front of this house and to the right is the Munkbron square, before the road was built this square was big and important. More to read about Munkbron at Wikipedia:
The canal is blocked here, one of Stockholm's most beautiful places has been replaced by concrete, it's a shame! Centralbron:Over Riddarfjärden we have a subway bridge, a railway bridge and a car bridge. It's the car bridge that has the name Centralbron. More to read about Centralbron at Wikipedia:
Slussen:The old Lock, Karl Johan Slussen is now demolished. I have as a project to follow this and the new lock they build. You can read about it here at my page Slussen and follow my stories. I can't even see the lock anymore, but it's behind these equipment. Now we have returned where we started this walk around Gamla Stan. Gunilla wants a fried herring, a fish to dinner. This street restaurant with herrings has been at Södermalmstorg earlier and Gunilla was happy to find it again at this place. Stortorget (Big square Old Town):One more walk up to center of Gamla Stan. At Stortorget we sat at this old restaurant, Sten Sture and took a toast and a beer.
