Day 3, from Rostock to Wismar and back:Already the third day, we felt we did everything we want to do in Rostock yesterday and can then spend this day for a visit at another place. With the new tickets we have we start to rethinking about our plan about how to travel and the following days are going to be very hot. Berlin tomorrow 34 C degrees, not our perfect day. Better to go to the coast, we found out that Wismar will be perfect. Here is a map of todays route: The Northern train line is without any changes. Rostock:With the tram we reach the Rostock HBF station within 10 minutes. We asked about how to do this travel to Wismar, very simple they answered us, just jump on the train and have the 9 Euro ticket ready. We had 40 minutes to do something until the train depart from the station. Walking around in the nearby blocks, take a look at the trains station from outside. Here we meet a strange looking girl with silver foil around the head, no Marsian, just doing a hair coloring. Even now when we are outside the old town the houses look good, a place that would be nice to live at. Now we are ready to go by the RC (Regional) train. We got seats and not many people on the train. After 20 minutes it stopped at a station where a steam train looks to preparing for a trip. The distance between Rostock and Wismar is only 60 km and we go in Western direction. It will not take more then 1 hour and 10 minutes. The more South going line with one change takes 1 hour and 30 minutes. Wismar:Then we arrive to Wismar, an old nice station we could see already from the train. Only 200 meters walk and we are inside the old town. The first old houses are framework houses, in Sweden we say Korsvirkeshus. This was something Gunilla had told she want to see. They have churches in Wismar too, many of them. This is the St. Nicolai church, they started to build it 1381. Here is more information about St Nicholas Church:

We continue our walk to the center, we don't see very much people here. Crossing a channel, we are walking on the shadow side of the street because today it's very hot, 32 C degrees. A couple of blocks later we stopped at a confectionery to have something to drink. Here we are at the square where the Rathaus is, the fountain, Wasserkunst, was designed by Philipp Brandin at the 16th century. Through one of the alleys we see a very high tower which got our attention. When we got closer the buildings also got older. This is a Maria church, we have Maria churches in Sweden too. In front of it is a memorial place of some kind. We could read on the signs that a mine exploded here and wiped out the whole area. This was during the WW II, a mine, it must have been aimed for the ships at the harbor and it missed a couple of hundred meter and struck the buildings here. On the rebuilt walls they have place tomb or memorial stones. Opposite to the church it was an excavation below the street level. We now follow the street Neustadt towards the harbor. |

Drehort, was that the name of the building or a company here ? Cigarren, they sell cigars of course. When we came to the harbor there wasn't any protection from the sun, very hot. A restaurant with sun screens saved the day for us. Two milkshakes were ordered, one with coffee and one with chocholate. The is the old harbor and it has a lot of its magazines left. The ones in the background looks interesting and we walk towards them. What a big building, it looks like they are rebuilding it, maybe to a shopping center or restaurants. Wismar was one of the Hanseatic cities, the harbor was important and here we see a copy of an old cargo ship. It was just departing but we didn't have enough time to take a tour with it, we thought also that it could be too hot for us during daytime. After this we walk back to the big square. |
We bought one more big bottle of water to survive this hot day and continue to walk. Back to the big square, the real name is Markt Wismar. We have already looked at this building earlier, the name of it got our attention, Scwedenwacke. It must have something to do with Sweden where we came from. A German lady explained for us, it says a Sweden Guard, about what we already guessed. Wismar came under Swedish control 1649, 1675 Danish forces took it. Pizza ? No, not this hot day. Time to walk back to the train station. We follow a park with a small channal. Where we leave the park in go into the old city again there is a water tower. This is a power station we could read somewhere. What beautiful it is. Back to where we entered the old city. The water is very green, it's not healthy to drink. 5 minutes more walk and we are at the station again. We had to wait 25 minutes for the next train back to Rostock, the same as we came with. Here is more information about Wismar:
We were very satisfied with this trip to Wismar, much more exiting than we had hoped for. |
Rostock:Back to Rostock, we go to the hotel for a shower and a rest. After that we plan for a dinner. We didn't want to go too far away from the hotel, we have already walked enough today. We remember a restaurant from yesterday evening, only 150 meters East of our hotel. One pasta and one shrimp dish and two beers. We now realized that we actually are in the former East Germany, what exiting, I have always wanted to visit it. |
