Day 4, Roma, Dalhem, Slite, Fårö, Kappelshamn, Lummelunda:Map over the fourth day travel. This day we investigated the North of Gotland. Dalhem:This fourth day our plan is to go North, up to the island Fårö. We start driving and didn't go long until we found something really exiting. When we reach Dalhem we see a sign along the road about steam trains. We already know the railroad museum from where we stay in Roma, the railway goes somewhere North. By luck we pass by the other end of the railway where this railway station is. Of course we stop to see what's going on at the railway station. They are preparing the train for todays tourists. The diesel locomotive running back and forth with the wagons and arrange them in proper order. The stationmaster overview the work and help them to connect the wagons together. More information about Gotland's railway:
The original station house is still here and the interior is fantastic. The staff tell us that there is a tour today, the only this week. Sorry to say, there is no chance that we could do that, to much other things already planned. At the railway station we looked at old photographs over the railway, they also told us that there were five private railways as most. More information about Dalhem:
Slite:Next stop for us is at Slite, it's on the Eastern coast of Gotland. We drove down to the harbor where the fish bar is, closed today. There have been a lot of news about this place the last year. There is a big cement factory here, a factory that need a lot of lime stone to produce the cement. But the problem is that they need to be certified to mine the lime stone and they didn't have this certificate yet. All the building projects are at risk in Sweden. At the harbor we also se a couple of fishing boats, they look to be owned by small one man companies not private. The lime stone mine is an open area, a viewpoint let us have a view over it, it's very big ! More information about Slite:

Hellvi:At Hellvi we found one farm that once belonged to Gunilla's ancestors. Takstens:At Takstens there is another farm that also belong to Gunilla's ancestors. It's very long back in time, hundred of years. At this place we got to talk with today's owner, they are not related to Gunilla but know about the farm's history. Fårösund:Most North of Gotland island we have Fårösund, here we take the ferry over to the island Fårö. It doesn't take more than ten minutes to pass the sea between the two islands. Gamla hamn:First stop at Fårö is at the Old Harbor. The land rise made it unusable many hundred years ago. We follow the beach to find it, it's nowadays in the forest. But first we found ruins after an old church. Not much left, just a pile of stones on the ground. Another sign gave us the direction to the Old Harbor. It's a lagoon well protected from the weather in earlier times. At the bottom of the lagoon they have found potteries from the Baltic countries. Back to the beach and have a look at the Rauks. Lauters:Coffee time, Lauters Cafe have what we need, a short relax is welcome at the hot day we have today. I don't remember if I got an ice cream or a soft drink, both worked as well anyway. Lauters' Harbor isn't far away, nice little place for the tourists that came by boats to the island Fårö. |

Digerhuvud:Just North of Lauter we have a long beach with big rauks at Digerhuvud, a nature reservation. We didn't drive all the way along the beach, the rauks looks the same, we have seen so many of them these days. An exiting formation formation in the rock got our attention, it looks like a fossil dinosaur egg. More information about Digerhuvud nature reservation (sorry, no English):
After a couple of hours we went back with the ferry to the main island Gotland. It's the second time I visit Fårö. More information about Fårö:
Lärbro:Dinner time ! Now we must have something to eat again, we found a Wåffel House, it's like a pan cake house and they are a bit special at Gotland. We ordered two of the biggest Wåffla we could get, mine with banana. After this I didn't need more food for many hours. Kappelshamn:In the bay of Kappelshamn there is a big deposit of limestone, the opposite side. They have 115 inhabitants. More information about Kappelshamn:
Irevik:I have never been at Irevik before, it's placed at the Western coast, halfway between Fårösund and Visby. We drove down the road towards the beach, halfway we stopped and looked at this cave, it wasn't very big. At the beach we saw some private houses, a camping place and a B&B. More information about Irevik:
Lummelunda:Lummelunda is most famous for its caves. But today we visit the park West to the caves, just a couple of hundred meters. |
Green grass and bushes everywhere, they had a lot of rain before we arrived to Gotland. We follow the walkway into the park. There are many numbered signs where you can get information about the vegetation and other things. A couple of small rivers flows down from the cave out to the sea. They have planted fishes here, pretty big, about 40 cm. They are called Röding in Swedish, a noble fish. We tried to follow the walkway up to the mill, but too much vegetation here and risk of getting ticks on the legs. We returned to the road where the parking place is and walk upwards. Here is where we wanted to get up to. They need to take a little bit more care of the park. A mill powered by water, it says to have the biggest water wheel in Sweden. The water wheel is inside the building, but the house was locked and we couldn't reach it and have a look at it. The water feed pipe, big water wheel needs a lot of water. More information about Lummelunda Cave:
Snäck:Snäck is a famous bath place at Gotland, this is Gustavsvik about 3 km North of Visby. It didn't look very nice this day and smell wasn't nice either. Maybe better another time. More information about Snäckgärdsbaden (sorry, no English):
Roma:Back to Roma, the last thing we did this evening was to take a walk to the old train station. The station is rebuilt to flats. but you can still see that it has been a railway station in earlier times. |
The museum rail road has got a new smaller railway station house from somewhere in Sweden. A house for retirees block the railway, in that direction there is a railway bridge over the river. Back to our own stay, Brukshotellet in Roma. Even if it was hot we slept very well every night, the beds were comfortable too.
