Lazy day, Fortezza, archeological museumDay 7:The three coming days we stayed at Rethymnon. Rethymnon, Hotel Daisy:This doesn't look good, massive dark clouds are rolling in. We decided to stay on the hotel today and just relax, plan some new trips. We don't have the rented car anymore. Sitting at Manolis place and eating some lunch. Looking out on the ocean, it clears up but still some rain. This place is just 50 meters from our hotel and open from morning to night. Day 8:Waking up in the morning, during the night it has been thunder and lightings. When it was most intensive the lightings never interrupted. In the morning we took a walk along the beach to se what's left of it. The sand has been washed out in the ocean. At our hotel the pool went out of service after the heavy rain. It looks to be a fine day today. We start walking towards the old center of Rethymnon. The black ship in center is the pirate ship, we planned to make a trip with it, but it was always too windy when we had time to do it. Venetian harbor:We decided to visit the Fortezza, the fortes. On the way we pass by the Venetian harbor. Fortezza of Rethymno:We found the alley that leads to the fortress. But now it start to rain again, found a cafe where we could protect us against the rain and get something to drink, coffee and fanta. This is the main gate. For the first time we got a queue, about twenty people waiting to buy tickets. Cost 4 Euro each. |

St. Paul bastion:We start with the Southeast corner of the fortress. This is a canon deck, the opening points toward the old city, a little bit strange. Walking towards the Southeast corner of the fortress. We see the end of the defense wall. St. Lucas bastion:A small and narrow little observation tower. Looks like them we saw at the island Sardinia. Over the years there have been a lot of rulers of this fortress, the Ottomans, Greek, Venetian, German etc. Deep in the ground they have found the remains of the Western port. The passage down to the port. This zick zack pattern make it easy to protect the entrance from invaders. It has been a lot of houses inside this fortress, it's big. Some rulers try to move all the people from old town into this fortress. |
An opening in the defense wall give us a view over the ocean, this is the Eastern direction. Walking further to the North defense wall. The little house is where they stored the gunpowder. The big house is where the consul lived. Outside the house they have collected a lot of canons. This are the ruins of the stores. From this there is another entrance out trough the Northern gate. It's very steep down to the ocean here, must be complicated to deliver the material this way. What is this, a lantern ? This is the mosque. |
We found an exciting hole in the rock, but dangerous to enter and we still don't know what's inside there. Now we have walked almost all the way around the fortress. Now we can see the Venetian harbor again. The West side defense wall from outside. This was very exciting to see, strongly recommended to visit if you visit Rethymnon. At Wikipedia you find more information about Fortezza:
It was very windy up at the fortress, so we walk down to old town where it's more protected against the wind. We also need to sit down for a while after this long walk. More rain comes, but now we sitting at a restaurant and could just enjoy the beauty, a rainbow appear. In the evening we investigate what we have on the Eastern side blocks from where we lived. We found a very nice restaurant where we had dinner. Day 9:New day and no rain, it's Saturday and then there is an market at the parking place near Fortezza. A new 3 km walk, my smartphone show me that I take 12'000 to 18'000 steps each day. We didn't find the market direct, it was more closer to the bus terminal than we thought, just a couple of hundred meters away. After the market we visit the bus terminal, we will take a bus to Chania the coming days and want to know where to go for the bus and how to buy tickets. After the bus terminal we walk through this memorial place. |
This is the archaeological museum of Rethymnon. We found it exciting at bought two tickets, 4 Euro each. This was interesting to see, it looks like the rock carvings we have at Sweden, supposed to be 3500 years old. I meet a new girl at the museum, Aphrodite, tried to have some small talk with her, but she was very quiet. The wall to the museum, it's a part of the inner defense wall of Rethymnon. We walked slowly home with a stop at a new restaurant. Always nice to test different restaurants when on travel.
