Corvette 1969 C3:

My friend still own his Corvette, it's a classic 1969 C3 cab. More than 50 years old now and needs some attention. Non functional heater system and some problem with the rear axle. It's always interesting to following what he is doing with his car. I have written down some parts with photos of it here.

Chevrolet Corvette C3 1969 cab. With its yellow paint and chrome bumbers it looks a lot more aggressive than my Corvette. This model is from the classic years, 1968 to 1972.

Corvette 1969 C3, rear axle:

The rear axle is problematic. I suggested to him to buy a new used axle. He found a 1976 rear axle with positraction and 3.36:1 ratio. Here we take it apart to see what's need to be replaced.

Rear Axle/Rear End Ratio Information:

According to this information all Corvette from 1971 to 1979 have positraction as standard.

The new used rear has axle arrived, a heavy piece of metal. The elongated hole shouldn't look like this, it shall have a circular shape. One thing to repair or replace. It's called: Carrier-3 series sxxxx something. The gears and roller bearings looks to be in very good condition. A restored rear axle costs a lot of money, this one was cheaper but need some care.

The shaft of the yoke looks a bit strange, only one was included and should be replaced anyway. It looks like they have cut of the yoke's shaft by 2 mm. Maybe because someone earlier forgot to insert the shims at the other end. The new shafts are 2 mm longer.

With the yoke removed we can see the clutches to the positraction system. After 50 year they need to be replaced for sure. The clip sync and hold the clutches in correct position, there are two sets of them on each side.

One of the gears, they are attached with splines to the yokes, the teeth grab the positraction clutches. The springs and the steel plates are part of the positraction system.

The clutches in the positraction system. There are five clutches and discs on each side. Three of them were broken, very common and you can only see if they are broken when it's taken apart. A set of clutches costs about 250 Euros. The one to the right is a shims, another one sits at the yoke's outer end, it was that one that was missing.

To the left, the clip that sync the clutches and hold them in correct position. To the right, the C-clip that hold the yoke in place. Very common that they are broken or loose.
