A cruise to Ystad and VisbyIt was not only the city to Ystad we cruised to, on the way back home we did a stop at the medieval town Visby at the island Gotland at the East. Map over Visby:From Ystad to Visby it's about 400 km. More information about Visby:
Where there are links in English I use them, otherwise they are in Swedish. Day 3 and 4, From Ystad to Visby (and back to Stockholm):We left Ystad 6 pm and arrived at Visby 9 am on the third day on our cruise. Lot of time for us to walk around in Visby old town.
It's a 1.6 km walk to Visby old town from the ferry. They had transfer busses too but we preferred to walk this sunny day.
We follow the harbor and can see Visby's old houses from far.
A pair of old boats, one of them a tug boat and the other maybe a ferry.
Old magazines in the harbor, just outside of the the medieval defence wall. Gunilla has some connection to this store. The street Strandgatan:
Gunilla went to the library for some research and I and Jan continue walking in the alleys. Here we are at the courtyard of the museum. The museum's address is Strandgatan 14. The street Mellangatan:
On the Eastern side of the Museum we came out on the street Mellangatan. The street Dubbens gränd:
Looking into the crossing streets and alleys, this is Dubbens gränd. The street Lybska gränd:
Visby is one of the best preserved medieval towns in Scandinavia. The street Funcks gränd:
In the Eastern direction the street Funcks gränd is steep. The street S:t Olofs gränd:
At the street S:t Olofs gränd we found the entrance to the DBW's (The Bathing Friends) Botanical garden. |
The street Tranhusgatan:
From the street Tranhusgatan we can enter the ruin Sankt Clemens church.
How can it be that this arc doesn't breaks and fall ?
During the day when the church is open it's possible to visit the upper levels, at least it was allowed earlier. It doesn't look safe to me.
The pillars has a wonderful style, we are lucky to have these ruins to visit.
My friend Jan who hasn't been here since his military duty in 1980s has a lot to remember. The street Säcken:
From the street Tranhusgatan we can see through an alley down to the Botanic garden. The street S:t Drottensgatan:
We walk further to next ruin, Drottens ruin. In front of it as a statue of one of Sweden's famous engineers, Christopher Polhem, 17th century. The street S:t Hansgatan:
Across the street to the Drotten's ruin we have Gotland's brewery. The street Syskongatan:
We walk to the street Syskongatan where we have one more ruin of a church. Sankt Lars' ruin:
This church is a bit special to me, it has the same name as me ! Sankt Lars' ruin. Not in that good shape as me, but it's older. |

The street Nunnegränd:
The ruins Sankt Lars to the left and Drotten to the right. The old yellow house is the cafe Paradise. The street Adelsgatan:
Take a rest for an ice cream, then the view from Krönet By's terrace.
The square Klinttorget:
Visby's Fire department, not so big.
Street Norderklint:
The street Norderklint is high above the lower part of Visby, from here you find great views. Visby Cathedral:
This church is not a ruin, it's Visby Sankta Maria Domkyrka.
We had to take a look inside the cathedral. Street Ryska Gränd:
Now Gunilla make us a call and tell that she is finished with the studies at the library. We decided to meet each other at the big square and walk in that direction.
We decided now to go back to our cruiser, slowly walk and a stop for something to eat. |
The square Rådhusplan:
The street S:T Hansgatan:
At this square we found a restaurant with saffron pancakes, Gunilla's favorite meal.
The restaurant has its tables inside the Sankt Hans church ruin.
We didn't eat very much because we have ordered a evening buffet onboard our cruiser.
The street Trappgatan:
The street Mellangatan:

The street Kilgränd:
It's not so nice to see how they scribbled on the wall. Not just scribbled, they carved the text into it.
There was a murder at the Visby hotel in 1996. The receptionist was brutally murdered at night and the murder is still unsolved. The street Strandgatan:
The street Donnersgatan:
We want to take a look at the park Almedalen, it's behind this house, Rindiborgen. For the students today, earlier it was a bath house.
Our politicians usually have their annual meeting here in Almedalen Park.
Even if the weather is fine today there are not many people here. The street Strandvägen:
The Baltic Sea, our way home to Stockholm.
No we don't have palm trees in Sweden, but look nice. The street Strandgatan:
Could this have been an old customs house ?
|
The Honey Shop, Gunilla bought something in this shop. The square Hamnplan:
Now we must go back to the boat and have a rest before the dinner. The street Skeppsbron:
Once a magazine maybe, today the museum Fenomenalen. The cruiser Birka Gotland:
Back on the ship, after a rest we take the elevator to the top floor.
Just minutes before we leave Visby.
The cruiser's engine is running and maneuvers the ship out from the bay area.
Last dinner buffet on our cruise. Today they served lobster and other seafood. However, I had roast beef and potato gratin.
After the heavy dinner, another rest and then to the showroom.
and then to the artist performance, it's the ship's own staff who perform and they did it great. The END |
