Day 1, Las Palmas, Playa de Las CanterasWe were very eager to travel to some place with more sunshine. Looking though the Last Minute offers and we found a travel to Las Palmas at Gran Canaria in Spain. It's a more than 5 hours flight to that place and we decided to stay for two weeks, something we didn't regret. Airport, Gran Canaria:
After we landed on the airport we have to find a local bus that take us to Las Palmas. The local buses are faster and to 1/10 of the cost compare to a transfer bus. The airport is big and it took us some while to find the bus. The end station in Las Palmas is at the Parque Santa Catalina, not far from our hotel where we stay.
It took about 30 minutes with the bus. We see a lot of heavy traffic and decided that we shouldn't rent any car, only use local buses. Map over Las Palmas and Playa de Las Canteras:The distances from the airport to Parque Santa Catalina in Las Palmas is 25 km. We live close to the Playa de Las Catalina. At Wikipedia you find more information about Las Palmas:
The square where our hotel is placed, it has eight palm trees with a fountain and many restaurants.
The green building to the left is where we stay, hotel Olympia. Hotel Olympia:
A nice lady in the recption welcome us and we check in and go up to our room. We got a nice big room. We prefer old style and not so big hotels so this is perfect for us and it's in the central area.
From the window we have a view over the square.
But now we want to see the town and the beach. Walk down to the reception and we get to see this cabinet with a lot of things in it. The race cars looks exciting.
On the ground floor is a foyer where guests can sit down and relax. The owner has a lot to tell about the hotel, I will come back about that later.
But now, out on the street and see what's there.
First thing to find out is where we can have our breakfast.
The receptionist recommended a breakfast place around the corner and her it is, Capricci, it's closed now during day time.
Follow the street C. Kant to the beach which is the first thing we want to see. Along that street we have this park, Parque Organico. We will pass though here most of the days. Playa de Las Canteras:
Here it's, Playa de Las Canteras. So nice, more than 2 km of beach walk with restaurants. This is to the North direction.
In the other direction, South we have this view. A lot of things to investigate the following days.
After walking around a while we need a break, a Sangria is served and we enjoyed the view. |

After some hours the clouds break up and let the sunshine come through.
It didn't take long time until the bath people came out on the beach.
A reef off the beach protects against the waves. The reef is only visible at low tide.
Looking through the windows at exciting stores.
This first evening we didn't walk all the way along the beach to the Southern end. We stop here and turn around.
About here we have our street into the alley that take us back to our hotel.
Finnish the evening with something to eat just outside our hotel. There are a lot of people gathering here in the evening and later when we go up to our hotel room we can hear it. It doesn't bother us that much and by noon it gets quiet. |
