My mother's travels in Asia:
|
One week in IsraelPlanning the trip:After Siri's first visit to Israel in 1978 she must felt it was wonderful because already three years later she do a second visit to Israel. Siri wasn't very religious but very interested in history. Even this time she had to go alone. Most information I got from postcard she sent to family and friends and some notes that I took when she still was alive. And then of course from internet. I also had to consult my neighbor Eva to understand some of the details. Map over Israel: This time Siri stayed at Netanya at the coast of the Mediterranean Sea. From Netanya to Jerusalem it's 90 km.
Netanya:She stayed at a hotel at the 8th floor in Netanya. She wrote that she had a great view over the Sea and the park Independence Square in front of her. No photos from here.
Tel-Aviv:From Netanya where Siri stay she did a trip to nearby Tel-Aviv.
Siri wrote: Not a single photo from this place.
Jaffa:She also visited Jaffa, but no photos from that place either.
Jerusalem second day:
On the second day Siri want to be sure that she find something interesting, she visit Jerusalem that she know has interesting places. She visited Jerusalem 3 years ago. This is the Station 6, one of the stops along Via Dolorosa. Here Veronica wipes Jesu's face two thousand years ago.
She continue to follow the Via Dolorosa walk, it's in May but not much people here.
At the end which is also Station 13, Stone of Anoiting of Via Dolorosa. It has now been three years since she was here last time. My neighbor Eva told me that this is the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, in Sweden we call the church: Gravkyrkan. It's thought to be the tomb of Jesus.
Siri says:
Siri's map with notes:
I found a new map over Jerusalem with Siri's notes. I can recognize: Western Wall, Church of Redeemer, Herod's gate, New gate, Menorah garden etc.
Jerusalem:
Here is a photography from her visit to Jerusalem on her own, here she can walk and see all the historical sites in peace and quiet. She also wrote in a postcard that she had visited a Mosque of Muslim, not sure which she means, can it be the one in the background? Maybe they wasn't allowed to take photos there, Eva explain: "there is no photography ban, but tourists are asked to respect the place". Netanya:
It doesn't look to be in Jerusalem old city, it could be at Netanya where she lives. Maybe back to the park Independence Square nearby the hotel after a long day walk in Jerusalem. Cave of the Patriarchs, Hebron:Siri must had taken a guided bus trip to Hebron because it's far away, 40 km South of Jerusalem or 130 km from Netanya where she lived.
According to the bible this temple has connection to Abraham and his wife Sarah, this is in Hebron.
In the park with the South wall of Cave of the Patriarchs in the background. Jerusalem and surroundings:This day she visit: Mosque of Omar, Bethlehem, Wohl Rose Garden and Israel Museum, total walk of 20 km, it could have been divided in two days or a guided tour. Mosque of Omar:It was only one photo of this mosque but it was a double exposure. She mentions something about a foot bath.
Bethlehem:
Over the door can be read: Sanctae Catharinae Virgini ET Martiri Dicatum. This is the Church of Saint Catherine, Bethlehem. Strange I found there are at least two Bethlehem, this one 9 km South of Jerusalem, and one other Bethlehem of Galilee, far North near Nazareth.
Bethlehem needs an explanation, Eva tells: Siri do this trip to Israel in May and have something to say about the weather.
Siri wrotes in a postcard:
Wohl Rose Park:
The Menorah was important for her, she took three pictures of it before she was satisfied. A Menorah is an important Jewish symbol. This Menorah was a gift to the Israeli state from the Brittish Parliament. The artist Benno Elkan, he spent ten years on design and construction of it. This park is close to Knesset's Parliament in Jerusalem. Another place to check off Siri's list of things must do in Israel.
Siri's notes:
|
Jerusalem Museum:
Here Siri visits the Israel Museum, just South of the Jerusalem city wall.
On the way towards Nazareth:A new guided bus tour: Nazareth, Sea of Galilee, Capernaum. Maybe started from Netanya.
The white houses in the background are perhaps Nazareth. Greece orthodox church?
The text on the arc is in Greece, asking Google AI: The inscription on the stone archway reads:
What kind of clock is Siri ringing, this must be a place before they come to Nazareth. I have seen someone ring this bell in a documentary, apparently an important bell. Asking Google AI and I get an answer that the bell is Greece, that connect it to the image before, same place. AI also informed me that she wear a vintage skirt from the 1970s. Nazareth:
Mater ECCLESAE is written above the gate. Located at the center of Nazareth. Eva says: "The gate with the text Mater Ecclesae is probably also from one of the gates to the Church of the Annunciation."
They take a walk together to next place to visit, a market.
The church in the background is called the Basilica of the Annunciation or in Swedish Bebådelsekyrkan. Eva says: "The place where tradition says that Mary met the angel Gabriel and received the message that she would give birth to Jesus." Located in the middle of Nazareth. Eva says: "By far the biggest tourist attraction in Nazareth. Built over the site said to have been Mary's home."
Beach, Sea of Galilee:
Here, Siri has arrived at the Sea of Galilee, in Sweden we say Genesareth. It's nearby Capernaum at Sea of Galilee.
She enjoy sitting here with her feet in the Sea. |

In the background you can see people get baptized, or are they just taken a bath?
Eva says:
It looks like a calm and relaxed place. Capernaum, the town of Jesus:
After visiting the beach at Sea of Galilee, Siri heads north with his tour group. On the north side of the lake lies the town of Capernaum, also called the city of Jesus.
Siri says:
This is Capernaum Synagogue.
The city has been excavated by German archaeologists.
This was the last photo from this trip, a one week stay in Israel.
After these two visits in Israel I think she had fulfilled all her dreams. By writing her story down I learned a lot about Israel's history and Eva learned me what make those places so famous. Her first visit to Israel you find here: Siri visit Israel, 1978. The END
