My travel in Europe:
Crete island of Greece

One week by walk, bus, boat and car at Crete, 2018

Day III: Visit to Hersonissos, Koutouloufari, Piskopiano, old Hersonissos and Malia:

Who said that vacation is a rest? This is hard work! Today we have four new villages to visit. We start in the morning and walking up in the mountain above our hotel, and then take the bus to Malia and the archeological excavation.

Google Map over Crete, travel to Koutouloufari, Piskopiano, old Hersonissos and Malia:

Koutouloufari:

To Koutouloufari we just have a short walk, but the road is steep. People we had talk to at the hotel told us that this village and two other up there is a must to see. We could not do any other thing than walk up and see what's there.

Church of St. Vasilios.

Along the road is as promised a lot of restaurants, this one we visited the last day.

We found this map to get the orientation, we don't want to get lost up here, lot of things to do today!

Another restaurant that we visited later.

As you see everything looks to be in a very high standard.

This is a photo my mother took when she visited Crete 1978, there is a difference!

At Wikipedia I found this information about Koutouloufari, but it wasn't much:

Piskopiano:

We don't have to walk many hundred meters until we came to the next village, Piskopiano.

Old Hersonissos:

Suddenly we was in the third village, old Hersonissos, here we found the rural museum that we had read about earlier.

This is the Raki machine!

Wikipedia has more information about Raki:

At the museum I also found this, a blacksmith's tools. I can recognize them from my grandfathers tools who also was a blacksmith in the early 20th century.

An olive oil mill. Later we will see the the whole island of Crete are full of olive trees.

The stairs led us up to a terrace.

From the museum's terrace we got a beautiful view over the ocean.

Even this village has a lot of restaurants.

Now we must find a short and safe road down to Hersonissos main road where we can find a bus to Maila. We don't want to walk at the roads that has heavy traffic, more relaxed after the small roads down.

Maila archeaological site:

One week at Crete, Minoan Palace at Malia

It took at most 20 minutes for the bus to go from Hersonissos to Malia, the bus stopped just outside the archaeological excavation.

I have not written down much information yet, it will come later.

Just before we enter the archaeological area we meet Therese, she working on a PHD research and want us to help her with information about how we walk around and what we looking at. She put on us a GPS unit to track us and ask for the photographs we took. Of course we helped her, and it was very interesting to talk to her.

Interkriti has more information about the archaeological site at Malia:

The Crypt:

To protect the excavation they have built roof over them. This building has a sign that says "Crypt", we don't know if it was only the corner or whole building.

A map help us to orient us in the area. First we explore the area third from the left, the crypt.

The Crypt:

A big panorama over this area, sorry to say the sign was rusty and no information could be read for this area. In a nearby house we found models of the buildings and got more information.

A small sign says that this is a crypt.

The village:

We walk down to next area which is the first one to the left of the map. We think this was the living and workers place.

A new panorama, made from about 20 individual photos to get a really high resolution photo.

The Minoan Palace:

After we finished this we walked up to the palace. They have not reconstruct the palace as they have done at Knossos. I must say that I like this better even if I think the "normal" tourist like Knossos better.

I have no idea what the arrow means, but it looks much newer then the rest of the carvings here, so maybe something for the archaeological people to orient after. Later we found this symbol once again, then in Phaistos palace, carved in rock.

To store food away from rats and safe has always been a problem, a pot is one solution and you find them everywhere. Un important industry at that time.

The stairs that led from the square into the palace.

Here you once again see the carvings that we also have in Sweden, but ours are much more primitive.

The Magazine:

Magazinez or store room, maybe grains or a butchers place.

Map over the Minoan Palace, the square and to the right the magazine. The eight circles at bottom are thought to have been used as silos or food stores.

Foundations for a row of columns.

A pile of stones, maybe a house earlier. This will cause the archaeology people here a headache to find out the function of it and how to set them together.

Two stone roads, the left one led to the eight silos.

One of the silos, I wonder what the purpose of the central stone is?

The cat was more interested to sleep.

This place was a bit outside the main area. After this we finished our visit here. Give back the GPS unit to Therese and help her with some questions. I think she will find our walks very strange and hundreds of photos to examine.

A very interesting, exiting and nice day for us and many thanks to Therese who gave us so much information!

Malia:

The bus back to Hersonissos, there was no time to visit the village Malia, this time.
