5: The road up to the telescopes

A view over the Atlantic ocean

A short rest before starting our driving up the mountain where the telescopes are.

2200 meters above sea level

Here we have taken us up to the observatory, up here at the volcanic peak there is a hotel and restaurant for astronomers. The picture taken on the road between hotel area and the little road that leads us up to the telescopes.

Italian telescope in fog

Here we pass the Italian telescope or Galileo National Telescope under construction.

But do you see something special? Yes you almost don't see anything because of the clouds! Here we have gone all the way from the cloudy Sweden and all the way out into the Atlantic ocean and up to a volcano top to escape the clouds. Was there any difference? No, maybe worse!

Caldera

Here we pass the caldera, a large opening in the crater to the west side, here I climb up when I have to make phone calls. Cellar phones was not so developed in that time, but can you imagine a more beautiful view during a phone call?

NOT and Hale Boop

The French who were with us observed the comet Hale Bopp, they had their observation pass until 8 pm, we got our observation pass after 8 pm and it last to the morning. Here is the telescope NOT and the Pleiades M45 and the comet Hale Bopp in the background.

The red glow in front of telescope building I remember came from a flashlight after someone who was passing by, looks a little bit exiting.
